Gas Companies and Why We're Getting Screwed

Gas prices, as everyone knows, have skyrocketed. You would think that this is because oil companies such as Shell and BP have had to pay more for said gas, a price increase which we are paying for, right? Well, It doesn't make much sense, but BP has reported a 63% increase in profit and Shell has reported a 25% increase. This really baffles me. If we are paying more for gas because they have to, then how are they making EVEN MORE money off of us? It seems to me that these oil companies are using the War in Iraq to their advantage. They can raise the prices and everyone will say "Well, we do get our oil from the Middle East. They're probably mad and hiked up the prices.". But, should we instead be asking why there are people who have to choose between food and gas when these companies are making a ton of extra money? BP made 7.6 billion and Shell made 9.08 billion in the first quarter. You would think that they would be losing money, with everybody doing anything they can to save gas. But, somehow in the midst of this potential crisis, they are still raking in billions. Something just isn't right.
