Beat the Gas Price Hikes!

Gas prices are at an all time high and are highly unlikely to fall in the short term. Anything that cuts the bill has got to be a good thing. One way is to start using a Gas Rewards Credit Card.

Gas Reward Credit Cards - How Do They work?

Gas Rewards Credit Cards give you cash back when you purchase both gas and other items. Some cards offer rebates as high as 10% on purchases - equivalent to getting a 10% discount, although this may only be for an inroductory period.

You use the card to pay for your purchase at a gas station and later receive a rebate from the credit card company in the form of cash, certificates or a credit back to your card, depending on the card.

There are two main types of Gas Rebate Credit Cards to choose from.

  • A gas rebate card issued by Visa or Mastercard through major banks offers gas rebates at any gas station along with other benefits. These cards offer up to 6% rebates on all gas purchases at any gas station for the first 90 days and then 3% rebates on all gas purchases after that.
  • A gas rebate card is specific to a particular chain of gas stations. For example, a BP Visa® Rewards Card lets you earn a discount of 5% on all participating BP location purchases and also can be used anywhere Visa cards are accepted.

Getting the best from Gas Reward Credit Cards

Pay the entire card balance before the statement due date to avoid paying the monthly interest charge.

Consider paying the entire balance at the end of the introductory period, to maximize the rebate benefits.

Many of these credit card deals will give you 0% APR on purchases and or balance transfers for at least 6 months. Most will require no annual fee and no setup fee.

However, be sure to pay off the balance in full each month or any saving you make on gas (and other) purchases may be wiped out by the monthly interest charges.

Conclusion

Gas Reward Credit Cards can be a great way to save on the high cost of gas directly as you fill up. However, they should be used wisely to maximise the possible savings.
