Episode 60 – Gay Icons: Judy Garland (The First In A Series) Recently I had some younger gays write to me asking about the genergaytion gap that exists between younger and older gay men. I think one of the things new gays don’t understand is how the gay icons can be clichés and still relevant today. In this series, watch my take on the gay icons. First up of course is Judy Garland! Do you have any idea how many gay men I knew in SF who owned cats named Judy? It was kinda scary.... Once Peter Allen married Liza, I think that helped set the gay icon cement for Judy. And I won't even get you started about Stonewall and Judy's death. BTW, did you know that Wikipedia has a whole entry about Judy Garland as a gay icon that's separate from her regular one?, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_Garland_as_gay_i
Scott, fantastic idea for a series! Please, please, please explain Cher next!
MH
MH - Cher will definitely find her way in the series but not until later...there are a ton that will (and did) come before her (believe it or not). Thanks for the idea though - always appreciated!

Why Scott, you don't look anything like your avatar:-)! Seriously, this is a fab idea for a series and very fitting for a gaytriarch such as you. It's important to pass along knowledge to the next generations!
Not being a 40-something gay myself, I look forward to learning more about the icons. I knew Judy and know there's Cher, but no doubt there's a whole bunch more in between (and since).
Can also relate to the "Do you know Dorothy" question as my own identification with Ms. Garland is her chemical dependence. So much sadness in those deep brown eyes. In my world the entree question is "Are you a friend of Bill W?"
