An overview

Queer!

The world has always been in a state of unbalance, for thousands of years the pursuit of equality has been decorated with violence and tragedy. I'm not going to make a claim to a sob story, I have lived a relatively sheltered life with very little of these misfortunes. However from my perspective as a bisexual and faithful man, the issues that face the gay community need to be recognised and addressed more redily by the straight community. Only recently have i explored my interest in other guys, that I have been met with nothing but abuse and intense hatred from the outset. I have been punched, kicked, spat on and nearly bottled in the space of a week, simply for dancing and kissing with a guy at a club. On the world stage the issue of gay rights has been subject to incredible debate, with world religions condemning people left right and centre, but I must admit that I am blind as to why.

Take Christianity for example. The bible states that the act of lying with another man is abominable, and those who do it should be put to death. Put to death. To me that seems fairly contradictory to the very foundations of the faith - thow shalt not kill, love thy neighbour etc. These are the staple arguments of the gay world, and I might be accused of recycling them yet again, but that doesn't mean that there is any less truth in them. Additionally, it's interesting to note that Jesus never has a word to say about the matter, and that the condemnation of homosexuality is listed alongside other satanic acts such as eating shrimp.

To clarify, I do not hate religion. Or the bible. Some of the principles that have been laid out in those ancient tomes have facilitated the grass roots of morality and conscience. The holy texts can still be used to stabilize lifestyles, create strong communities and inspire humanity. But several (including the bible) say that women should be treated as second class citizens, or that slavery is an acceptable and moral course of action. Is it fair to say that these ideas are outdated? Most would agree, and yet still so many discriminate against the gay community, under the guise of holy benevolence and the unquestionable word of God.

So there is an brief opening to my topic. Whether it be a personal experience or a political opinion I would love to hear what people have to say about it.
