Marriage. What does it mean?

Referendum 71, Passed in Washington. Now conservatives all round think that gays are going to get married soon. Now I say to all you Right-Wing Homophobes, “Look around. If you want to save marriage from being dragged in the mud, you need to save it from what it is going on right now.” This is not a one sided opinion that means nothing I pose a solution to the problem, please keep reading.

Elvis impersonators are able to marry two really drunk people while at a window at a drive up chapel. Do you think that is a healthy marriage? But, two people who really want to share there love and want to take care of each other through thick and thin, who happen to be the same sex; that is WRONG! I mean really. What kind of message are you sending to the young folks? That is all right to elope in Vegas, but not to enter into a loving relationship if they biologically can’t produce a kid together.

Marriage is in danger. Divorce rates are at an all time high. What needs to happen is to really look into what is causing this. It can’t be gays entering into marriage that is a new thing only around for the last ten years, and divorce has been an option since before the US was created. Why are people entering into life long contracts only to turn around less then ten years later and divorce? Is it that it is so cheap to get married and that you get a tax break if you do? What if you didn’t have to declare your love by buying a ring, but the right to marry?

Also what if you could only get married in a church, but were connubial. It means the same thing, but what if the two words meant two different things. What if one was a contract dictated by law and the other was something performed by a member of the clergy? Marriage would therefore be protected from gays. Unless of course, the gay couple had a church that would recognize them and perform the marriage. But then, you wouldn’t go to that church anyway. Having these two words would cause a bigger rift between church and state, which is what America loves.

So I beg you to spread this idea around to everyone, hint, hint, your congressman might like this idea.

I like the Hub, but you could go further. Post-menopausal women, and sterile men and women, can get married, so the premise that it is about "couples that produce children" is also a myth. It was always about discrimination against American citizens by those who cannot, or will not, accept that all people should have rights. When it comes down to it, a marriage license is merely a piece of paper that is recorded and is subject to challenges. If they wanted us to believe there is some "sanctity" inherent in that piece of paper, they not only should make divorces much more difficult, but they should also perform due diligence to assure that the marriage is beyond reproach. Otherwise, denying gay people marriage licenses makes about as much sense as denying them building permits. Society simply would not benefit by making gay people live in crappy houses, nor does it benefit by denying them access to ICU units or opening the pathway for relatives to have more standing than the person's partner.

Hooray for the 52% of Washington voters who rose above prejudice to assure civil rights for all citizens!
