That is the ominous finale of the introduction in the newest chapter of the Gears of War Saga. Gears of War 2 stays true to the originals winning formula of content and action but increases the scale dramatically. The campaign mode of this game is solo and is by no means nothing less than great, but the multiplayer player mode is what has really grabbed everyone’s attention. In Gears of War 2, the game designers have taken the multiplayer mode from the original game and buffed it up dramatically making this the perfect game for any fan of action packed games.

The story line for Gears of War 2 picks up about 6 months after the end of the original. The planet of Sera’s trouble continues as the Locusts tunnel further underground and begin to sink cities from below. As you begin the your adventure into Gears of War 2, you head up the delta squad as mankind’s last, desperate effort to stop the Locust attacks by fighting them underground.

The setting for Gears of War 2 is generally darker than it’s predecessor, and the storyline will take you deeper into the lives of the characters and sheds more light on the Locust invasion. Although this increased leaves a lot of questions unanswered, it does include a captivating mix of heroism and personal tragedy.

Gears of War 2 also as a much different visual style than the original. We all remember the overwhelming amount of massive monuments and crumbing buildings of Gears of War 1. In this version we get a much more organic view of the world featuring spectacular scenic views that are rich in detail including enormous underground caves, snow capped mountains, and lush forests.

Although the basic game play is still centered around massive amounts of fire mixed with melee attacks for close up fights, Gears of War 2 has added a ton of new moves, including:

• Awesome chain saw battles that are player controlled by pressing B repeatedly.
• The ability to punch your enemy to death once he’s down.
• The ability to pick up a fallen enemy and use their body as a meat shield from incoming fire and when you’re done, snap their neck and toss them aside.

There are also some changes to grenades, including a new smoke bomb and a poisonous gas variety, you also have the option to stick any type of grenade to a surface to use as a mine. In addition to the new grenades, Gears of War 2 also gives you a whole new set of firearms to choose from such as a flame thrower for short rand and a boom shield for cover.

In addition to that, you get some new heavy artillery that are extremely powerful but will limit your movement in exchange for your ability to blast enemies away with dramatic pwn power. Your choices include a machine gun that will shoot through the thickest victims in a single burst and a rocket launcher that does massive AOE damage, taking out several enemies at once.

The new multiplayer has been ramped up quite a bit. The two-player co-op allows each player to set their own difficulty level and drop in and out of the story line as they please. Gears of War 2 is, however, missing the 4 player co-op which will be a disappointment to many Gears fans. But you won’t be disappointed by the multiplayer vs. mode.

The Gears of War developers have increased the number of players for it’s competitive mode from 8 to 10, plus they’ve added 3 new game modes and 10 new maps.

• Submission: The mission for competitive is a twisted take on the old capture the flag idea. In this version, the flag has been replaced by a civilian with a gun, and your mission is to him and carry him as a meat shield back to your home base.
• Guardian: A team based game where each team has a designated leader. Your job is to keep the leader alive, as long as your leader doesn’t die, the rest of the team will continue to respawn. However, once the leader dies, respawning ceases and your team can be taken out one by one.
• Wingman: This mode splits players into teams of two. These teams will need to stick together to survive since the only way to come back after you’ve been taken down is to have your partner revive you.
  

Although they did cut the 4 man co-op for the story mode, there is a new hoarde mode in Gears of War 2 that allows you to work with up to four of your friends to fight off wave after wave of enemies. As long as one player on your team stays alive the waves will keep coming, growing in number and difficulty each time. Making this mode a virtually endless source of entertainment as you try to see how far you can get.

The new maps also come with some new environmental features that will drastically change how each map is played. Snowstorms completely changes the layout of the map as walkways and stairs are covered up or buried completely by snow. And hail comes down in razor sharp chunks that cause damage anytime it touches you, making it necessary to stay undercover as much as possible.

Gears of War 2 may be similar to the original in game play and style, but the host of new features, graphics, and effects still make this a worthwhile investment.
