Pregnancy is a very exciting time and most parents spend time wondering whether they'll be having a girl or a boy.  Whether or not you try to find out the gender through an amnio or ultrasound scan is a very personal choice - some parents prefer to leave the surprise until baby is born, while others prefer to get the surprise early!  Of course, medical procedures aside, there are other ways to consider whether you might be having a girl or a boy...

Chinese Gender Chart

The Chinese Gender Chart is one popular and fun way of predicting the gender of your unborn baby.  Apparently discovered buried in a royal tomb hundreds of years ago, the chart is based on the mother’s age at the time of conception and the month of conception.

BUT, almost everybody who reads the gender chart actually reads it WRONG!  The Chinese Gender Chart is based on a lunar calendar, so there are two very important steps you need to take to make sure you are reading the chart correctly.

  1. Find out the date of conception on a LUNAR calendar.
  2. Find our your LUNAR age at the time of conception

This website performs the calculations for you and has a chart for getting your result.

My calculations for my children are as follows:

My date of birth: 5th March 1981

Child #1 was conceived on 3rd April 2005
According to the lunar calculator, 3rd April 2005 falls under the 2nd Lunar Month and I was 25 lunar years old at that time.  Therefore, the Chinese gender chart says I had a boy …. And it’s CORRECT!

Child #2 was conceived on 30th June 2006
According to the lunar calculator, 30th June 2006 falls under the 6th Lunar Month and I was 26 Lunar years old at the time of conception.  Therefore, the Chinese gender chart says I had a boy …. And it’s CORRECT again!

If you’re pregnant now, open the link above in a new window and try it out – be sure to come back and let me know whether or not it was correct!  If you already have children, check their conception dates against the chart and see if it would have correctly predicted the gender of your children.

Is the chinese gender chart correct for you?

Old Wives Tales

Of course, there are a number of “old wives tales” which are centuries old and are said to predict the gender of an unborn child.  Here are just a few:

  • Are you craving salty foods during pregnancy?  Then it’s a boy!
  • Look at your bump – is it big and round or smaller and sticking straight out?  Big and round means a girl, smaller and straight out means a boy.
  • Add your age at the time of conception to the year of conception.  If it’s an even number, you’re having a girl!  If it’s an odd number, you’re having a boy! Do this online here.
  • Acne getting worse during pregnancy?  It’s a girl!
  • Leg hair growing faster during pregnancy?  It’s a boy!
  • Feet colder than usual?  It’s a boy!
  • Hold your hands out in front of you – do it right now.  Did you hold the palms up or down?  If your placed your palms up, it’s a girl!
  • Cravings for orange juice?  It’s a girl!
  • Are you looking good this pregnancy?  Must be a boy, then!
  • Did you have morning sickness early in pregnancy?  Must be a girl!

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope you had fun guessing the gender of your unborn child. Remember that this is all for entertainment purposes and you should hold off on choosing a colour scheme until baby has arrived – even ultrasound scans can sometimes indicate the wrong gender!!
