Finding Your family Tree online

Researching your family tree online is a great way, to find your long lost relatives and make great friends along the way. Some times the things you find out may turn out to be something you wish you hadn't. That's part of the fun in researching. There are many helpful sites with people more than willing to share their information with you.

Family Search http://www.familysearch.org/

This is a brilliant site. Click on the above link when it opens click on search. Fill in the details as requested: First name, Surname- You can do the same for spouse or leave that free and leave all selected to start, then year range, year. Select country, State, and then, click search. Check out each name, possible dates, etc. When you find one of interest, click on the name underlined in blue. When this comes up, check on details, then on family, if you need more verification click on pedigree.

Final thought: - Do not leave it, until it is too late. Ask your parents about their, childhood. The schools they attended and how they met. Write their story of events down and any interesting times during their lifetime. Relive their life, with them.

Good information. It's so true you shouldn't leave it to late. I wish I'd asked my Mum and Dad more about the family while they were still around.

These are wonderful links to have posted here. I am an avid Genealogist by hobby, and wish to second your advice to ask anyone who is still alive to supply you with all they know. It is much easier to get it from someone who is alive than trying to figure it all out later.... Thanks for all the info.

Very glad to help you. And I wish you all the luck in the world as it takes so long and much frustration trying to find records.

Excellent information, Another tip for folks is to make sure that you put names, dates, places etc on your photo's so you will not have a box of old photo's and can't remember who anyone is.

hi victoria, you need to start right from the beginning. Write down who your parents are and all other relatives. then gradually work backwards. Searching on the net working on one side of your family line. Start from say your fathers side and do a search on the net. never add people until u prove that it is the right line. check out my other genealogy links for more help. you need to verify information by checking the birth certificates.
