So before we understand how credit card numbers are generated, here is a brief explanation of what a typical credit card number means

Out of the 16 numbers on a typical credit card, the set of first 6 digits is known as the issuer identifier number, and the last digit is known as the “check digit” which is generated in such a way as to satisfy a certain condition

Following is the list of standard issuer identifiers :

Diner's Club/Carte Blanche 300xxx,36xxxx, 38xxxx

American Express 34xxxx,37xxxx.

VISA 4xxxxx.

MasterCard 5xxxxx.

Discover 6011xx.

HOW TO GENERATE THE CREDIT CARD NUMBER (....LOLZZZZ VALID CC NUMBERS):

Take down any 16 digit number.

Ex : 5490 1234 5678 9123

Here 549012 is the issuer identity. So from the above issuer table we can make out the card issuer i.e. MasterCard in this case.

and 3 is the check digit

Follow the steps to check the validity of card :

1.Leave the last digit i.e. the check digit.

Here : 3is the check digit

2.Then write down the same number again without the alternate even places from right.(considering check digit to be at place 1)

Here it becomes _4_0_2_4_6_8_1_3

3.Now multiply the dropped numbers by 2 and replace them at their places.

If the number is a 2 digit number then add their digits to make it a single digit number.(ex: Total comes 18 so add 1 and 8 to make it 9 and replace)

So the new number should be

(5*2) 4 (9*2) 0 (1*2) 2 (3*2) 4 (5*2) 6 (7*2) 8 (9*2) 1(2*2) 3

= 1 4 9 0 2 2 6 4 1 6 5 8 9 1 4 3

4.Now add the entire digits of this number.

Here the total is 65

5.Now here we have to apply a mod10 check

Simple remember that if the total in step 4 is a perfect multiple of 10 then it is valid credit card number.

If the total comes out to be a non multiple of 10 then change the check digit(3 in this example) so as to make it a perfect valid credit cards.

6.Here the total 65 is not a perfect multiple of 10 so this number is not a valid credit card number.

So replace 8 in place of 3 and the number becomes a valid credit card number.
