Social bookmarking is all the rage on the web today. One of the top social bookmarking sites is StumbleUpon.com. You can generate massive amounts of traffic to your website by having your website stumbled by users of StumbleUpon, known as Stumblers, and given positive ratings for your website or articles.

StumbleUpon works by allowing users to rate a website by using a "thumbs up", "thumbs down", or a "neutral" rating. Stumblers can add comments about the site too. With video on the web taking off in recent years StumbleUpon launched a new service in 2006 that allows its users to rate video.

Here are some tips on how to use StumbleUpon to generate traffic to your website:

Tip #1 My mother once told me that, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Remember that when you are stumbling sites. If you don't like a site then don't rate it at all. If you give a site a neutral or thumbs down rating then the website owner my view it as unfair and give you a similar rating. Avoid this by just not commenting on sites you don't like.

Tip #2 Web 2.0 sites are about building community and relationships. So you will want to be actively involved in the StumbleUpon community. Participate with other stumblers in forums and interest groups. Participation helps you earn trust and build your credibility among the other users. By building good relationships you can ultimately receive a lot of positive rating for your website.

Tip #3 When you are stumbling be sure that you actually explore the websites that you rate. You want to learn enough about them to give some effective commentary in your comments about the site. Don't just stumble sites for the sake of it. Other stumblers will pick up on it and your credibility will be damaged.

Tip #4 If you find a site that you really like then by all means lavish lots of praise on the site in your comments and let other stumblers know why this is such a great site.

Tip #5 Be sure that you have configured your toolbar settings properly. Select the subject preferences that you prefer. This will ensure that you are stumbling websites that are of interest to you.

Tip #6 If you write articles that other people will StumbleUpon then you need to remember to create a good title, tags, and links with targeted keywords. Make sure that you make up an interesting headline to capture some attention. Write in short concise paragraphs, and make sure that your content is relevant to the keywords that you are targeting.

Tip #7 Variety is the spice of life. And variety on the web is spicy too. So make sure that you spice up those pages with not only text content, but with links, images, graphics, and video too.

Tip #8 Always end with a call to action. Make sure that you ask the reader to give your content or website a "thumbs up" if they like what you have done.

You can actually outsource a lot of your traffic generation needs. Outsourcing is cost and time effective. By outsourcing you will free up more of your time to concentrate on doing things that you do well. Outsource those things that are time consuming and that you are not an expert at.
