Generations of Quilting
Some people say quilting is an art, I guess when you think about it it is. My mother taught me how to quilt when I was in my early teens. Her mother taught her, just as hers had taught her. Once you learn it is calming to sit at a colorful quilt and know that when it is done, you have something that will last for years. It can be handed down to your children, then down to theirs. I've lost count of the quilts I've done and helped to quilt. My mother and I would sit for hours quilting and talking. I can say though that when you first start, you will have really sore fingers. The needle has to go through the top, then the filling and out the lining. It's like sewing but just alittle harder. You want small stitches, but I can say I used to have real small stitches. They are now I guess, at least toe nails don't get caught in them. Okay that was a joke! If the quilting isn't just right you have a hard time making people happy. That is the key, keeping people coming back. I try to take pride in my work. I have my mother to thank for this gift. She is gone now but I try to keep the tradition going. Although I didn't have any girls, I want to teach my granddaughters how to quilt. They aren't old enough yet, but God willing in time I can sit with them and show them how to do this wonderful art. Hopefully if they have daughters then they will also pass it to them.

Thank you for your comment Lowell's Notes. Quilts are cherished when they are from someone close like grandmother's. She did the work out of the love she feels for you.
Thank you for the welcome also.
Naomi - I have been thinking about making a baby quilt for a friend. Haven't made one for quite some time. I think a lot of people are intimidated by the idea of such a project. Why don't you put together an instructional quilt hub for us scaredy cats?
Dolores,I will do an instructional hub about quilting. If you quilt a baby quilt for your friend, I know she will cherish it. Thank you for the suggestion on a hub, I hadn't thought about doing one on baby quilts. Thanks for reading.

My grandmother loved to quilt--she gave my wife and me two quilts when we got married. One for picnics and such-the other for "inside use only". :D
Welcome to Hubpages! I would like to read some of your short stories. :)
