Did you know that one of the fastest growing market segment are products that offer bleaching or whitening of human genitalia?

I was just as surprised as you are! Anal, vaginal, groin, underarms and other intimate areas of our body are typically darker in shades and get more so as we age, undergo hormonal changes as a result of pregnancy, stress and life’s ups and downs. My girlfriend sent me a video link (YouTube) about women and their rationale for doing that.

We all want to look our best. Men and women are working harder at their careers, lead stressful lives and want to look their best when they meet the opposite sex.

In the Far East, Middle East and African cultures, women have always been drawn to skin whitening products for cultural reasons. However this trend has reached Western cultures as well. Clinics offering such products have mushroomed all over the US and women subject themselves to harmful treatments – often in unhealthy spas, beauty salons and clinics.

Here is a list of commonly used skin whitening ingredients:

  1. Hydroquinone – FDA is considering banning it.
  2. Kojic acid
  3. Arbutin
  4. Mercury and related compounds
  5. Tretinoin
  6. Alpha hydroxyl skin peels
  7. Azelaic acid
  8. Bleaching agents – glycolic acid

I came across a research article on Niacinamide (also known as Nicotinamide or Vitamin B3) that described work done by P&G and their findings. Some of the beneficial properties of Niacinamide include – reduction of skin hyperpigmentation (skin whitening), reduction of acne, increased skin moisture and reduction of fine wrinkles.

Niapads contains 4% Niacinamide on a easy to use scrub pad. While the manufacturer promotes it for acne control, it is easy to use for whitening as well.

It works! The manufacturer’s slogan is “Simple for Pimple©”, but they might as well change it to “Simple for cheeks” ™– my trademark.
