Gestational diabetes is a diabetes type that happens to pregnant women when there is no sign of diabetes known before the pregnancy. While there is no real proof regarding what causes the disease, many experts believe that this is due to the hormone activities during the pregnancy. These hormonal activities develop a condition when the body becomes insulin resistance. When the condition happens for some times the blood sugar level become higher then normal. This is the main reason why pregnant women may have diabetes.
This disease doesn’t happen to all pregnant mother, however, various researches show that there are about 4% of the pregnant women in the US have gestational diabetes. There are no real reasons why it happens to some women and not for other women. However there are many factors that might increase the risk of this diabetes being developed. Mostly the condition only happen to pregnant mothers who are at 35 years old or older, have obese problems, or if they have a history of diabetes on their family.
Gestational diabetes usually is developed during the 24th weeks of pregnancy. This is why usually pregnant mothers don’t find any blood sugar rate increasing during their first trimester.
If you are pregnant it is suggested doing blood sugar levels monitoring from the first time of your pregnancy. You have to do the test periodically to be sure the blood glucose range is always on the normal ranges. If you find any increasing it is suggested to ask your doctor right away. This is very crucial because gestational diabetes can affect your pregnancy and baby.
Generally, gestational diabetes can be controlled and managed with the right diet. Actually, most oral diabetes medicines are not suggested in this level because it may affect your body and the baby condition. Hypoglycemia is an example.
Planning a proper gestational diabetes diet is very crucial in this level because you are on pregnancy. You need sufficient nutrition supply each day to support the pregnancy and the growing baby, while at the same time you need to be sure the diet you eat will not increase the blood sugar levels.
Generally you will need calories intake, several essential vitamins and minerals supply, and also certain amount of proteins to support the body and pregnancy. If you don’t understand how to count the nutrition amounts you need, it is suggested to consult the doctor about it. Actually, you should contact the doctor to consult about your diet. Again, the general purpose here is to be able to plan the right diet that can support your body and the growing baby while to be sure the foods will not elevate your blood sugar levels.
It is also suggested to consume various vegetables and fruits, you can make it as a juice. Drinking a good amount of water is also recommended because it will help you lower the blood sugar levels.
