Get Healthy and Stay Healthy after Cancer
62The devastating effects of Cancer not only physically, but also mentally can last for quite some time after the treatments end and you are given a clean bill of health. For many cancer survivors, it is a sober reminder that they need to start things off in a more healthy way if they wish to remain cancer free for the rest of their lives.
For those who have recently gone through cancer, it may take as much as a year following their last treatment to regain their strength and confidence once again. This can be very frustrating at first, but with proper diet, supplements and a moderate exercise program, the body will begin to regain much, if not all, of its former abilities and many times be healthier than it was before.
If you are a cancer survivor, here are some ways to get healthy and stay healthy after cancer:
Eat well
It goes without saying that food is something that can bring back somewhat negative feelings in those who have just gone through chemo-therapy or radiation treatments. During that time, you may have lost your appetite and sense of taste. But it’s important that along with the foods you love, that you start adding in fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products to give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to continue the healing process. You can also take vitamin supplements to help you get enough of these things into your system. Whenever possible, eat organic foods and avoid any processed foods.
Get rest
During your cancer treatments, you probably either had trouble sleeping through the night due to side effects or you felt as if all you could do was lie there and rest. Now is the time to start resuming a regular bedtime routine and getting a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night, no matter how restless you may feel. You’ll feel better and you won’t miss out on the important things in your life if you are rested.
Get up
That’s right. You may have been down for a short time in your life, but now you can get up and get the physical activity that you need to rebuild your strength and endurance. Take it slowly and increase the amount of activity that you do each day by five more minutes. If you can take walks outside in the fresh air, then do by all means. If you have a gym nearby and can go, then take the time to add some swimming and light strength training into your routine.
Stay positive
The mind is a powerful thing and it’s probably how you were able to cope with and survive the cancer. But now that part of your life is behind you so you have so many wonderful things to look forward to. Take time to think about everyday what you are grateful for and hold onto that thought as you start your day. Keeping a positive mental outlook will sustain you and help keep you healthy, both body and mind.
Cancer can decrease the health of your body. Reclaim it with rest, good food, a positive attitude, and a gradual return to physical activity.
