Cooking is much fun but what many of us never thought of is whether we are getting rid of the oil we use the correct way. Disposing of your cooking oil is very important, and we give you great pointers on doing it right.

The Drain and Kitchen Sink Is A “Big No”

Many of us love nothing more than have a big cookout and feeding the whole family but what's to be done with the irritating by product? You might simply shrug your shoulders and don't bat an eye about pouring it down the drain or simply wash it down at your kitchen sink like you always do but that's one huge mistake!

When dumped down the drain, cooking oil (especially cooking grease) can clog up your pipes, back up sewer systems, and wreak havoc on the sewer treatment plant at the end of the pipe. Never knew that, right? Well, it's never too late to start doing it right!

Cooking Oil Solutions: For Bigger Amount

Tip 1· Mix larger amounts of cooking oil with an absorbent material like sawdust or kitty litter before putting in the garbage.

Dispose of large amounts by dividing it over several collection days.

Tip 2. Don't forget that you can recycle your cooking oil. Simply sift or screen out the solids and use for cooking another day. Be sure to save the container the oil came in to store it properly for reuse. Most cooking oil can be used a number of times.

Cooking Oil Solutions: For Small Amount

Tip 1• If you only have a small amount of cooking oil, you can get rid of it by first absorbing it with kitty litter, or some other solid absorbent material like shredded paper, and bagging it up tightly.

Tip 2. Hot grease can be poured into a metal or plastic coffee can to solidify and placed in the trash. This may not ideal situation, but it is much safer for the environment than disposing of your oil or grease down a drain.

Tip 3. Alternatively, you can scrape grease and food waste from plates, pots, pans, grills and kitchen utensils, and put it into a trash can.

Tip 4· Put baskets and strainers in sinks to catch food scraps.

Tip 5· Let grease solidify in a container before putting it into the trash.

Remember, you can come up with plenty of better solutions than dumping your oil down the drain or kitchen sink!
