Hitchhiker's Guide to HubPages - A Newbie Navigational and Etiquette Guide
74In this hub - Things to help you become a stronger Hubber:
- How to read a fellow hubbers' hubs
- What to read
- Things you should be noticing
- What to navigate
- How and when to comment
- How and when to become a fan
So you're the new guy.
I'd like to start off by saying, "Welcome to HubPages from all of us hubbers. We're glad to have you and hope you are enjoying yourself so far."
Getting started on HubPages may seem overwhelming, but HubPages is really super simple to use, and provides easy to access and excellent information on how to get your very own, shiny, new hubs on their way.
While you’re concentrating on getting your hubs fine tuned, choosing topics that excite you to write about, gathering your info, deciding when and how to sign up for Google, Kontera, Amazon, eBay, Analytics, all the while amazing yourself and your friends and family…
You’re also reading other hubbers’ hubs. It’s probably why you decided to join HubPages in the first place. If you’re not reading others’ hubs, you should be. And you should be doing more than just reading them.
Welcome aboard. And don't worry, we've got you covered.
Don’t know where to start?
One place to start is the topics section. You can link into it by clicking the topics tab at the top of the page. Click ‘n pick. It’s that easy.
Join a “tag fan club”. Choose from preset, general, popular tags. You can get there by going to your “my account” page and then clicking on “tag fan clubs”. Choose tags whose topics may interest you. ALSO choose tags that may correlate to the hubs you may be writing; they will probably be one and the same, however in the event that what you write is not necessarily what you’re in the mood to read, choosing a tag to favorite which corresponds to your writing is important.
You will also want to check out Hubnuggets finalists. One way to find them is by searching “hubnuggets” in the search box on HubPages. There are ten new ones each week, which are subsequently voted on by the public and other hubbers, and narrowed down to five finalists.
Of course Hot Hubs and Best Hubs and Best Hubbers are fabulous places to search for hubs to read.
Get some reading done
Obviously hubs are made to be read. So by all means read them.
- If the topics interest you, read them.
- If you like a hubber’s style of writing, read.
- If the hub looks aesthetically pleasing to you, read.
- If their name or avatar interests you, have a read.
- If any or all of the above apply AND the hub or hubber’s score is high, read and read close.
-
Were they a Hubnugget finalist? Read and read close.
Read to find what it is they are doing right, so you can apply that, relatively, to your hubs. A good hubber gives you something to compare your hubs to. Something to strive for.
Content. More than just the main hub.
Read the content of the hub. Content is ALL that is contained in each particular hub; its packaging, its extras, and its embellishments. It’s what gives each hub its own special unique look and feel, as well as the opportunity for the hubber to add extra information that readers may be interested in, may find useful or entertaining, that brings something to the topic, and/or emphasizes an opinion or a hubbers information. Content also includes extra bits of information that may not be directly related to the hub subject, such as scores, when the hubber joined, number of fans, etc.
This includes (but is not limited to) the following, and should be noted with each read:
- Hub score (located in red, at the end of the hub title): What is it? Is it high, is it low? If you really liked this hub, but it has a low score and it isn’t a new post, look for reasons why. The more familiar you are with scores and scoring, the better idea you’ll have of possible answers. For more information on scores you’ll want to start off by checking out the forums (by clicking on the forums tab at the top of your page), or the help section (by clicking on the help tab on the top right). If the hub score is low, but the hubber's score is high, it's possible that the hub is new, and that checking back in a couple of days or so will prove it to be a higher scoring hub.
-
Hubber’s score: What is the hubber’s overall score? This can be found in the top right 'about the author' box under the hubber's hubname, along with where they are from, how many fans they have, how many hubs they have published, and when they joined HubPages. If a hubber has a high score, chances are it’s because they are doing the right things. All of the “content” you see in their hubs accumulate to one final fluctuating score. Compare that to the score of the hub you are reading, how many hubs they have written, and when they joined, and you’ll have an overall feel for how to utilize their overall hub content. Again, a closer look at how to understand and utilize this information can be found in the forums and help sections.
-
Joined: When they joined will tell you how new or how seasoned this hubber is. Compare this to a high score, and chances are they know what they are doing, and therefore you should be paying attention. If you are reading a hub from a seasoned hubber with a nice decent score, who has also written quite a few hubs, then know that this is possibly a good opportunity for you to check out a wide variety of topics and hub types (which you can find by clicking “Read more hubs by” in the upper right 'about the author' box) so that you can get a feel for some of the possible ways you can utilize hub pages.
Ad placement: Note types of ads that appear on the hub you are reading, as well as ad placement. You don’t see them as you’re setting up and arranging your hub, but once you hit publish, they’ll be there. Looking at other hubs with various formatting will give you a better idea of various looks your hub can have, than the preview option, where you will see possible add placements highlighted in green boxes. (Note: You can "preview" your hub on HubPages at any time while in editing mode. A preview will not effect your hub and will open in a new window or tab and will give you the option to refresh the preview as often as you need to without having to save -- though saving frequently is a good idea to ensure you do not lose any information.)
Related videos: Are there related videos? How many? What size are they? Where are they placed? Do they work (If so, how so)? Are they relevant?
Photos: How well do they work in the hub? Are they relevant? Where are they placed? What size are they? How do they effect your mood, attitude, reading, of the hub?
Note that everything in the "Add More Stuff" box is at your disposal. While reading other hubs, look for how and where other hubbers use and place their capsules. It will save you time and help you get a better idea of what you may like to do in your hubs.
As you’re reading, ask yourselves these questions:
- · What is this hub about?
- · What is its purpose?
- · Does the title match the mainframe?
- · Is the hubber consistent?
- · Does this hub make you want to read on?
- · Does the hubber bring in fresh information on the topic?
- · Does the hubber bring a fresh voice to the topic?
- · Is the information easy to understand?
- · Is the information well formed?
- · Does this hub feel complete?
- · Is the hub sectioned out nicely?
- · What stands out most after reading the hub?
- · Does the hub satiate you? Make you want to respond? Set you off with ideas of your own? Make you want to find out more?
- · Would you read this hub again? Why?
- · Would you pass it along? Why?
Things you should be noticing - "Comments"
HOW TO COMMENT AND HOW TO READ COMMENTS
You would think that commenting is a simple thing. And you are thinking you could probably skip over this section. "I can read. I can write. What's your beef?"
Think again. This is the spot in which you may be making your first impression. Not just to the hubber, but other hubbers, and the public, who stop by this hub for the duration of this hub's existence. So ask yourself how good of a first impression you are wanting to make. Probably a very good one; so read on.
The comments section is a place to get more information. In most good hubs, this section will solicit at least one of the following:
- questions
- answers
- further information and ideas
- other related places
- other hubbers with related interests
- reasons why the readers enjoyed the hub
- general banter
All these things add to a hubs quality, mood, flair. You will also get a taste for how particular hubbers and readers comment, as well as a taste for the hubber himself or herself. By all means, if you're going to leave a comment, read the comments that are going to come before yours. Do not disregard comments, ever. Especially if you are wanting to leave a comment.
Did someone else already say what you wanted to say? If so, you may want to say, "so-and-so, I agree that..." or, "as so-and-so mentioned," or, "I agree with so-and-so when he or she said..."
Are people in the middle of a conversation? If so, you may want to find a way to ease your comment in. Not always possible. Sometimes you just have to get it out. But other times you can say, "yeah, blah blah blah... by the way, (your comment here)."
You will look like you care (which you do), and you will give yourself an approachable quality.
Make substantial comments as often as possible. If someone likes what you have to say, they just may click on you. If they've seen you around a bit, they just may click on you. First impressions count, and so do second ones, and third ones, and ...
Note: Be sure you say what you mean and that you mean what you say. And by all means, please don't be rude.
*Looking for more good reads? Check out the hubs of some of the people who commented. You just may find some gems you would have passed up otherwise.
Things you should be noticing - "Fans"
HOW AND WHEN TO BECOME A FAN
So you really liked what you read by a particular hubber? Read more. Get a good feel for the hubber. Check out his or her profile. Browse around a bit. Still a fan? Show some team spirit and let them know.
But don’t let your avatar hang around on their fan page like it's loitering. This is another chance at a first impression. Real fans proclaim their “fanship”. You’ve done your research; now let the hubber know why you’re becoming a fan. What about his or her hubs do you really enjoy or admire? Is it their topics? How they write? Do they make you laugh (appropriately, in other words, be sure they mean to)? Did you learn a lot from reading their hubs? Do you think they have great looking pages? Think of these, and other things, and comment. Make your voice heard. Make yourself noticed.
This extra effort on your part will make all the difference in the world.
While you there, check out other fans of the particular hubber you are "fannining" [ =D ]. As in the comments section, you just may find some gems you would have passed up otherwise.
Note: It is NOT a good idea to fan someone for the simple sake that they became your fan, and then say so. This only makes you out to be pompous (maybe you are, though this is not the point). A hubber's fan pages are like their walk of fame. No need to put your hand-prints under their signature.
Y'all come back now, ya hear?
Well, this hubber hopes you had an enjoyable read and learned something useful along the way. Wishing you the best of luck, and hope to see you around. Don't be a stranger.
--F.B.
What makes each hub unique is the hubber themselves. Give your hubs a voice of their own. Happy Hubbing!

Thanks anjalichugh! I read, read and read, and ate, drank, and slept HubPages for two weeks. Time for me to go relax!
You're wonderful! Ok, so now I have to ask, what impression did I make in my first couple comments to your hubs? Laugh!
Silliness aside, this is great, you know more about HP in 2 weeks that I've caught on in 4 months! And you're funny and engaging telling the tale! Very observant about the fan dynamics and the comment dynamics :-)
Another hubnugget, in my totally unbiased (ahem) eyes!! Brava!
Hi Elena. And thank you. As a disclaimer, I have to say that I don't think ill of anyone who comments saying, "nice hub" or fans me with no comment (they may be in a hurry to read something else I have written or feel on the spot). Speaking of Hubnuggets, lets hope we get to the 100 vote today. Last count I saw we needed 28 more votes. And it's a close one! Hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!
As Elena has already said, I'm amazed you've gathered so much valuable information so quickly! I hope all new hubbers check this out, because you've done a great job of laying it out in an interesting, informative, and fun hub to read.
Thumbs up! :)
Thank you so much for this well written piece. Your writing is delightful to read, and your content worthwhile. The format of your pages is clear and concise. Thank you for pointing out what makes a quality hub, and how to do it!
I really like the pictures in this hub. They are so fun.
Thanks Pam. I appreciate the thumbs up. Glad you liked it! it was fun wetting it up a bit (get it, dry subject...) =)
And thanks Christa. The photo's definitely helped liven the subject up a bit. Glad everyone's enjoying them as much as I do. That first one's a crack up. Microsoft Clip art, yet again. You just have to know how to search the darn thing! Thanks for stopping by.
Frieda, What a great summation and tutorial. Good information even for those that have been around awhile! Thanks!
Thanks, and Your welcome TripletMom. Good to hear from you. I've been enjoying your hubs. Those kids are too much. Fun stuff. Great video choices, by the way. That little boy Isaac, now so much older of course, must love to show off that youtube video of himself with Bill Cosby. Wish I had one like that to share. Good find!
Great Hub.
Thanks for stopping by, Linda.
This was not only refreshing but well written and you certainly did your homework ,it is great to see something new and exciting for new hubbers to read on hubpages as I remember being new and completely lost. You are so clear about commenting and it also shows that they actually read your article. As for mannerism, it is certainly nice when they are not rude however it is also great to see constructive criticism as it makes you a more well rounded hubber. :)
WOW thats really well done thumbz up... it is a real guide for newcomers... I guess hubbing can get really easier if the new hubber get a chance to view this :D well DONE
You clearly have an analytical eye and a joy for what you do. This Hub encapsulates just about every reason someone would want to be here, and how to manage their work here. Oh gosh, that doesn't quite do it justice.
What I see is that you "got" this place in a 2-week instant. HP ought to hire you.
All thumbs up.
Yes indeed well done and THANK YOU FRieda! Believe I joined about the same time you did and read a Hub that said "as on the pdf you get when you first sign up" - YIKES! Is that true? I signed up groggily at midnight and haven't had a chance to look in the light of day so to speak. Still cannot find that illusive directory pdf.
Your Hub immediately struck me as something I wanted to read - not only for the info, but right off the bat I thought, "wow - how did she format the photos? This is what I want my hub(s) to look like!"
Guess I have more research to do - your Hub is a GREAT start! And now I shall trundle off to read a few more but you know what - I have become a fan of someone's if I liked what I read, or appreciated their sharing what I needed to read. Due to time restraints, reading them all might not be totally essential - and thus, I will undoubtedly become yours :)
Hi AEvans! Good to see you. I totally agree about the criticism. It's extremely helpful.
It's how we critisize that makes the difference though, I feel. As writers, most of us, we should be keen to diplomacy in our wordings. And of course critisizing and being rude are two different things. I think we all do a good job with our criticisms and I have seen it appreciated time and time again in comment sections.
Your point is a good one, and if you don't mind I'd like to add it in if that's okay.
Thanks.
Uriel, hello and thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it.
Sally thanks! I wonder if HP will read this. I am for hire you know. (Wink and LOL.)
SEM Pro, hi there! Nice to meet you. I love your profile essay by the way. Very cool. Hope to see you around in comments and forums, and may a hub or two of yours?
I know exactly what you mean, that's one of the reasons I wrote this hub. Look here, look there... but where is that?! I thought I'd start with the topic of observation first. This is getting such good responce, I think I'll try to make it into a series and try for one a week. I think I'll work on capsules next because they are a major bite for the fearful.
The awesome thing about HubPages is that you can't make a mistake that you can't fix. And you can go back and edit for the lifetime of your hub. So just remember, don't be afraid, just go for it! The only thing you can't go back and change is the URL. If you want to do that you have to cut and paste the whole thing into a new hub.
Thanks again for dropping by. See you around soon!
WoW! Are you sure that you are not a vertern in disguise? Wonderful and well informative piece. Needless to say, you have got my reading attention with this great article. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much RGraf. I'm so glad you enjoyed. You've got some great hubs yourself. Thanks again.
You clearly have excellent skills in observation and application. You've studied HP, and applied what you have learnt to write a really useful Hub - thanks.
Looking forward to reading more from you.
Thank you so much Patrcia and Patricia. Looking forward to reading your stuff too. Took a peak and sounds inspiring.
Great piece. Lots of good info here especially for us newcomers. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Cindy!
nice piece ,,,especially as you are a new comer...
good luck...waitin more hubs from you..
Hey unclesam. Nice to meet you and thanks, Still trying to get over this flu cold so my brain is half there. :( But more are definitely on the way. Hope to see you soon.
hi frieda babbley - thanks for joining my fan club - have reciprocated, and good luck with the HubNuggets poll by the way. I love the liveliness of your hubs - you and joined at around the same time - it'll be interesting to see what kind of Hubbers we are in - months .... or when we reach our 50th hub .... we'll be old pro by then. I'm bookmarking you§
Thanks for the support Iphigenia. It will be so interesting. I think we're off to a great start, don't you? I wonder what our 50th hubs will be about. You got me thinking now! Oh, and good point you just made, whether you meant to or not. If you like an author, bookmark them for easy access! Thanks again Iphigenia.
Hello, Frieda! Your hub is a delightful read, especially to an enthusiastic but rank beginner to HP - me! How marvelous that you've figured out so much, so soon. I can only hope to emulate your early success, and then work to maintain it. Your personality and sense of humor really shows in your hub, and I think that is so important for a writer to have a "voice." Best wishes for a wildly successful future! Thank you again for the great example. Jyl Milner
Hi Jyl. Welcome to HubPages. Pleased to meet you. Can't wait to read your first hub. Great profile page, by the way. I can't wait to see what topics you've got in store for us. Sounds like you've got a lot of great background to work from.
Thanks so much for the compliment, and I really do hope it proved useful to you. Hope to run into you often.
F.B.
Frieda - I don't know how you picked up all that so quick, you must be A#1 smart lady. glad i found you, i'll be back. i also like your picture, nice lady having fun
Thanks Dolores! I appreciate your comments. Hope to see you around hubpages lots.
This is a excellent guide Frieda. Your layout is so easy to follow, informative and really interesting reading. Great job. A big thumbs up for me.
Thanks blondepoet! Glad you liked. =D
I enjoyed this lively Hub, too. You provided needful information clearly. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome, James. I need to do something with the title though. It needs more views. There's a couple of thing I want to add to. Thanks very much for the read on this. It was getting a bit lonely.
Frieda I LOVE your hubs. I am new to the scene and your information is so clear and concise and easy to take in. You can definately hear your personality come out in your work which inspires me to do the same. I feel like I need to write the things that are going on in my head lately so I know you're tips will help me in accomplishing that. Great hub again and it's great to meet you!
Thanks lesleyls! Glad you came by for a read. Sounds to me like you're on the right track. I'll definitely be by to read your stuff. Welcome to hubpages!
Thanks for the Hub Guide, Frieda. Truly informative. I'm new and I review laser treatments and anti aging products for work, so have created some hubs about it. Do drop by and say hi!
Hi there Pearlin24. Good to see you. You're very welcome and thanks and will do. Glad you enjoyed.
Hi Frieda, I enjoyed your interview with tonymac04 and took a look at your article for newbies. Thanks because there is so much in this article. I really enjoyed it. I'll refer it to anybody just starting out at Hubpages.
Hi Rick.I'm so glad you found it to be helpful for newcomers. Thank you. Very nice to see you. You have a nice niche in network marketing there I see. I'll have to check it out. Thanks much, again.
So, when did you join the Hub Pages staff:-)? Seriously, this is the best tutorial I have seen. Too late to go back and make a first impression, but still many tips to perfect my hubs and hub presence.
Well done and much needed! MM
Thanks Mighty Mom. That was funny. =). It does help to go back and remind ourselves of some tips. I really like this one, but then, I'm partial. ;) Thanks for the read. Good to see you.
I wish this was around when I first began. Great tips and you are tops! Watched the vid and it ended too quickly. LOL I was just getting into it. peace dear, CC
Me too, CC. Isn't that a fantastic video? Just goes to show, a story can be presented in many different ways. Great to see you cc.
This a gem I missed and found as a result of a comment, some excellent information and I am surprised I had not spotted it before. Take it from me you can never stop learning, as I found out from a 14 year old earlier this week who pointed out a problem with one of my blogs from an SEO perspective, just when I thought I knew it all. Proven wrong twice in the same week, guess I'll have to keep looking, listening and learning.
Can that 14 year old come over here? lol. Thanks Brian. Enjoyed your article on the world's best disco this morning! -- Yes, there's something new to learn every day. Humbling to say the least.
Thank you for this hub . I joined a short time ago and have been so confused about how to make my hubs look better and all the ratings and such . You covered everything.
Thanks wendi_w. Welcome to hubpages. Glad this could help! Let me know if you have any questions, just click on my contact link.
You know what Frieda I used to always love yer hubs until I went off on an ego trip, I am glad I got my sanity back, you are without doubt my fav writer, this one is going to the Forums best hubs ; )
You had an ego trip in just 9 days? That is far out. You sure work fast. (And I bet you say that to all the beautiful Friedas who are great writers.) Yes, I'm afraid I do have an odd sense of humor. Thanks much HealthTip. =] I've been enjoying your writing as well, and I'm not just saying that because of the compliment as you well know. You get the the core of things that most people speak of in general terms. The things no one else wants or thinks of to talk about, you do. HubPages is quite lucky to have you as well.
Great hub pointers here. Got a lot to do I am a newbie and this will definately help. Than you very much. We look forword to reading more
Hey there Leop. Hope you're having a great time so far. You're off to a great start by the way. Great hubs! Thanks for reading.
I actually learnt from that, I wish you would start writing again Frieda, you really do have a talent.
Wow, really? Very cool. Thanks HealthTip. And actually, I have been writing, just not here for a while. I've been writing for myself (lol) over at Eye On Life Magazine, and "trying" (key word) to do the November novel month thing. Good to see you. =]
Hi! I enjoyed this hub-- you write well, with clarity and purpose. Great thoughts, too.
Thanks Jane. Wonderful to meet you. Glad you stopped in for a read. Thanks much for the comment.
Thanks for this informative article. I've just joined HP today, and your article has been a great help in getting my head round things.
I will refer back to this article when I get round to setting up my first hub page this weekend....
Welcome to HubPages mammakerr. Hope you're enjoying it so far. Wonderful to meet you.

Hey that's great. You seem to have joined just 2 weeks back and here you are giving the best possible info about Hub Pages. Welcome and thumbs up.
