Get Paid Higher Than Ever Before
63It's late on a Friday evening. The sky was turning its crimson shade of yellow and orange. The traffic was picking up outside as workers from other jobs were filing out of the office to head home. All day long Jane has been running to and fro. Her boss was asking for everything to be done. If he asks me to do one more thing today, she thought. "It is already 5:20 and I'm going to miss my show if I don't leave within the next 10 minutes." At that moment she glanced a crossed at her co-worker who looked as though he hadn't even begun to notice the time. He was so busy into what he was doing he didn't even look up. She thought for a moment, looked at her watch again and thought, well maybe just twenty more minutes... You may not realize it, but there is more potential in the job you presently hold than meets the eye. Most people think that it would be more beneficial to leave their present company and find better opportunities elsewhere. This isn't always the case. If the place you are working doesn't appreciate all you bring to the table then it is time to step up your game and show them what you're made of. In showing them what you're made of you may just get the pay you desire right at the job you're already at. Most people don't want to admit that they may not be doing everything they can to prove themselves a valuable employee. In not doing so, they are quick to want to blame their lack of progress in the company on their employers. Sometimes it only takes a glance at oneself to find where the fault truly lies. And if this is true then changing jobs isn't the answer. If you want to be paid what you feel you are worth then make sure you're worth it. Do everything possible to show your employer that you can and will get the work done well. That same old attitude of just showing up to work and taking up space isn't going to be the effort that screams to your employer, "Give him/her a raise!" Grab the attention of your boss by doing quality work. If you are looking for substantial pay then show you're worth being paid more. Don't go to work thinking that you are only going to work according to what you're getting paid. If you do more than is expected of you then your boss is sure to take notice. An employer doesn't give out raises according to who thinks they need it the most. They give them according to who is willing to put in the extra effort. Say you and your friend have the same job with the same company. He is married with children and you are single. Would you think that your friend deserves a raise more because he has more mouths to feed at home? If you said, "No," you're right. Then don't expect employers to think, "Yes." Employers are sure to be willing to discuss a raise when, and only when, you show you deserve one. If you can seriously look at yourself and ask whether you're worth being paid more and answer yes, then go get your raise. Whether you want it to consist of better medical coverage, a longer vacation, or just more money, you hold the cards. Just show yourself as a vital part of the company. Do more than what is asked and expected. Make sure that you know what you have to offer, but also remember that you are a current employee. If the boss is not feeling you at this current time and doesn't wish to offer you a raise you may just have to accept those circumstances at that time. You don't want to burn bridges with your current employer or make him become defensive. This is especially important if you don't have another job to retreat to. Play your cards right and don't lose your shirt in the process. If/when you quit, quit gracefully! Considering how you have to take all offers under contemplation. You have to know how to get out of your current situation if it comes to that. You will only be hurting yourself if you leave inappropriately. Still, give notice of your intentions to leave. Make sure that you handle all interactions with co-workers and your current position in a mannerly fashion. Keep in mind that down the road you may need a good reference from this employer. Also, don't forget that they hold your final paycheck in their hands. You never know, if you're willing to stay until you train your replacement your boss may just see something in you that they aren't willing to give up. In your readiness to improve your situation, your boss may just find himself or herself not wanting to let you go. If there isn't any future for you with your present employer because you're working a dead end job then don't wait to be offered another job. Get moving and go get another job. Here's how: 1. Read local and out of town classified ads. 2. Read classifieds in towns you'd want to relocate to. 3. Sell yourself a. Try placing an ad about you and your qualifications. Create your own job! Consider creating a job that highlights all the skills and interests you have. If you like to take pictures in your spare time, maybe you may want to sell your expertise to a company that is looking for your capabilities. You never know when a company may be seeking skills that you have and will pay you for them. Think outside the box in an area you feel isn't being fulfilled out there and see what you can bring to the table. Imagine having a hobby as a profession. Now that's a recipe for happiness. Be Prepared! When looking for a job, the first thing that you have to make sure is right is your resume. Your resume is the first representation of you when you apply for a job. It will aid the employer in remembering you through the objective and summary you have on it. Know that future employers want to know how hiring you will benefit them. Make sure that you use your resume to show an employer what you can do for them. They are not interested in what you can do for yourself or what you've done in previous positions. Basically, he will only desire to know what you've done in the past when it benefits what you will do for his company in the future. If you are seeking to change careers, what you have done on different jobs may not mean anything to a future employer. Skills in managing people and saving the company money will always be important. All in all, make sure that your resume presents you best. Tips for the best-looking resume:
