Getting Baby To Sleep Tips

Are you having problems getting baby to sleep? Would you like to learn some simple tips & tricks that will scientifically help get your baby to sleep? Then you gotta learn the "Five S" system.

The Five S's will help calm your baby by engaging her natural soothing reflexes.

Here's the 5 S's:

  • Swaddle
  • Side/Stomach Position
  • Shushing
  • Swinging
  • Suckling

Swaddle

Swaddling is a great way to get your baby to sleep because it simulates the mother's womb. People have been swaddling their babies for centuries because it really woks. Not only does it keep your baby warm & secure it also helps to keep your baby from startling herself with those flailing limbs when she sleeps. It also restrains the Moro Reflex, which is that involuntary spasm that you see your baby do when she thinks she has lost her balance.

Side/Stomach Position

The Side/Stomach position helps turn off the Moro Reflex by putting him back in the position he was in when he was in the womb. Do this by holding your baby on his left side to help in digestion or on his stomach for support. I personally like to put my baby in the football carrying position.

Shushing

A lot of times we shush our guests when we want the baby to sleep when we should be shushing out babies to get them to sleep. When your baby was in the womb there was constant white noise from the heartbeat, or from the blood blowing through Mom's veins, or even the noise that was going on outside. In short, babies don't mind noise! To do this, turn your baby on her side, put you mouth right up by her ear and make the Shhhh... sound. If you don't have time to do this. Invest in a sound machine or even a CD that has sounds that mimic the sounds in Mom's womb.

Swinging

Swinging or a gentle swaying motion, once again, imitates the sensation of being 9 months in that place of safety & security where there was almost constant motion. Swinging activates "motion sensors" in your baby's ears, that trigger an involuntarily calming response from the baby.

Suckling

Suckling is one of the most instinctual actions of a baby. In fact, my baby suckled just minutes after she was born. It is very calming for them. So offering your baby the breast or the bottle can soothe them almost instantly. Sometimes they don't even need to be eating to be soothed, just suckling something will do it for them. For that reason, you may want to implement a pacifier to help in getting your baby to sleep. Or if you can't find a pacifier you can always use your knuckle or a finger.

While these five things aren't the only things to do to help in getting your baby to sleep. They have been used by countless parents around the world to help their babies become master sleepers. Just keep in mind that your baby is still adjusting to this new world that she just came into. The more you can do to help your baby adjust to this new world, the more successful you will be at getting baby to sleep comfortably through the night.
