Dragon flies

What is it that fascinates us about the dragonfly? Besides the character it may have played in the movie: "The Rescuers", as Evan rude, or as in the movie called: "Dragonfly" with Kevin Costner.

My niece, who is also my godchild, is hung up on them. She loves to collect them, as they are said to be the symbol which brings comfort to ones soul. I can actually say I have never really seen one up close and personal, other than in books, figurines or on plaques.

Did you know that the dragonfly also comes in a variety of colors? Blue, red and yellow, besides basic black? I only thought they came in dull colors such as black or brown. I wasn't even aware they were of different species and from different continents across the world. Perhaps because science had never been my strong point in school, nor had bugs ever held an interest for me, until recently. You have to admit, they are unique and quite beautiful to look at in their own way.

The Praying Mantis got his name actually by how he held his prey. But, if you look at his front feet it almost looks as though he is praying, doesn't it? He is said to be the symbol of divinity, or direction. An old legend tells how ancient priests thought him to point the way to which they must go, or that of lost children, without ever steering them wrong.

I had two encounters with a praying mantis of late. One on my drivers side window when I came out of a store. A few days later, another who was on my side of my sister's truck's hood as if waiting for me when we came out of the movies. Because it was all within a few days,  I became curious as to what it all might mean, as they seemed destined to find me.

I have to admit...it unnerved me a little, as my only encounter with them in the past was when they were kept in a jar for science. Even when my younger brother was into collecting bugs as a child, being fascinated by them. I am merely intrigued by their legends and meaning behind them. Otherwise, although given to be interesting, I prefer them at a distance or in a jar.

There are many other winged creatures in the insect world whom are well known to most of us. One such as the lady bug, who is cute and usually red with black spots. Or pesky flies, gnats, variety of bees, moths, and even flying ants. But, some I had never heard of or seen before such as the one pictured...the green lacewing.

I still have to stick by the butterflies, as they are my favorite of such winged creatures. They are beautiful in color  as well as variety and gentle appearing.  Unlike some insects who appear to be miniature dragons.

Insects are amazing, and are said to serve a purpose in our ecosystem. If you had a favorite insect, I wonder what you'd choose?

Of the lot listed by you it would have to be the butterfly ... some of them are so pretty and colorful - and they never bite!

Did you try and find out why the Praying Mantis have developed a fascination for you? :)

I did do a hub on butterflies. : ) Therefore I did not add them to this one. I call them flutterbys in their hub. :)

No, I did not investigate why the Praying Mantis is fascinated with me? Hmm!
