Getting Organized with Your Dog and Pet Supplies
53
With a new year comes new organizational To Do’s. On your To Do list, if you add organizing your dog supplies and other dog accessories, this can help get your pets ship shape, too. Here are some tasks you might want to add:
1) Add monthly cleaning to your list for all pet items: dog beds and bedding, toys, food and water bowls, couches, even your dog. You may let the dog washing go for awhile when winter sets in, if your pet doesn’t go outside much.
2) Get organizing containers together like dog food storage containers and treat jars, a basket or toy box for toys, a bin or special drawer for dog clothing, another by the back door for leashes and extra collars, doggie coats and sweaters, etc. Then start organizing ruthlessly, putting things where they belong. Place grooming tools and supplies in their own area, too, like under the sink in a storage bin: nail trimmers / clippers, shampoo, pet meds (heartworm, flea and tick drops), wipes, ear solution, etc.
3) Label your storage containers and keep them organized, putting items back in place once you take them out and use them. Use either masking tape and write labels or make fancier ones with your computer and printer, or find plenty of varieties at the local office supply store – or shop online for some.
4) Keep pooper scooper items stocked – like bags and wipes – and everything together in one place, like by your back door.
5) Keep training aids all together: dog training books, videos, CDs, DVDs, cassettes, whistle, special leashes and other items you may have. And make a note on your calendar to use them – regularly. Mark the Animal Planet and National Geographic television channels into your schedule and learn more about your dog and how to teach better behavior. Then schedule regularly walks and other training into your weekly To Do’s.
6) Give back to the local animal rescue groups, Humane Society and / or other pet organizations in volunteer time or donations of some type to help other canines and canine lovers. Extra non-expired food, treats and all types of accessories: bedding, leashes, collars, shampoo, etc. is usually very welcome. Call ahead if in doubt.
