Getting Radio Play
63
Radio is a great way to marketing your music. Creating great music is really exciting but getting it played on the radio is another story. You must first do your homework and not jump the gun ignorantly. I know how excited you are to get your music out to the public but make sure you know your limits and know what your doing when it come to radio marketing. The best thing you can start out with is to know who your potential listeners are, because they are your targeted audience. I would suggest college radio first, they are more open and easier to get air time. Have a good pitch if you want them to take you seriously enough to play your songs. Start out by sending them the CD single and indicate that it is the song you are pushing for the album. When you develop some fans and popularity, you can offer to do concerts for that particular college to build a bigger fan base. The problem that most indie artists is that they overlook the college radio and try to hit the major stations. The problem with this is that the major radio stations see what records are selling and are being played on other radio stations the most. Broadcast Data Systems(BDS)tracks radio play with computerized technology, this is how stations learn whats being played. If your going to go for the majors, contact the radio consultant at the radio to see if you can get them excited about your music. But I'm sure you might soon realise that its better to climb your way up the ladder starting with college radio before you try to convince otherwise. But please always be professional and creative because it will go a long way in helping your career. Local radio stations are good radio marketing because they sometime will give a local artists air time before they would anyone els. The reason is that they know that if your doing local shows and concerts, chances are is that they will gain new listeners. Make sure you be creative and professional, and remember that you are in the driver seat. How far do you want to go. Oh, almost forgot, please have your CD in stores before getting your songs on the radio.
