Getting Rid of Stretch Marks with AHA’s

So, let’s get ready to discuss, getting rid of stretch marks.

Although it is not possible to completely get rid of stretch marks, there are lotions for getting rid of stretch marks that contain AHA’s. These lotions actually help to reduce the visibility of stretch marks by removing some of the top layer of skin and encouraging healthy skin to grow beneath this.

What Are AHA’s And How Do they Help In Getting Rid Of Stretch Marks?

AHA’s are acids that are generally taken from fruits and are also known as fruit acids. They help in getting rid of stretch marks by removing the top layer of skin and so allowing healthier skin to rise to the surface. As this happens the stretch marks tend to fade, although no treatment will really remove them completely. The earlier you start treating your stretch marks however, the more you can get them to fade and not be as obvious.

How Are AHA’s Used in Getting Rid of Stretch Marks?

AHA’s are found in store bought creams which need to be applied regularly in order to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and help them to fade. By using AHA creams on your stretch marks or in areas where stretch marks are most likely to appear, you remove the top layer of skin and encourage healthier skin to the surface, this also helps to moisturize the surface layer of skin keeping it softer and smoother. For homemade treatments containing AHA try using lemons, pineapples or papaya.

With almost any treatment you use, it’s best to apply it twice a day. Once in the morning and again at bed time.

AHA creams are beneficial because they stimulate cell regeneration by burning off, or lightly removing, the top layer of skin cells. By doing this, healthier skin cells are exposed, improving skin texture and colour and allowing moisturisers to be absorbed so the skin remains supple.

While penetrating the skin's surface, the water-binding properties of AHAs improve skin elasticity and some believe they assist in stretch mark reduction as they moisturise. Initially, your skin may feel dry and flaky from the dead cells being sloughed away, after a few weeks AHAs will almost certainly make your skin feel and appear smoother and visibly reduce stretch marks

Choosing AHA Creams for Getting Rid of Stretch Marks

The cream that you choose for getting rid of stretch marks is also important, particularly with regard to the percentage of AHA it contains and the pH. The percentage of AHA in the product should be at least 8% but not more than 40% (unless under doctor’s supervision). The pH of the product should be between 2.5 and 4; if you are going to leave it on overnight then the pH should be between 3-4.5. Take care when choosing the product that it does not irritate your skin and always wear sun protection when going out into the sun if you are using AHA creams.

Although one can never permanently get rid of all stretch marks, AHA creams when applied regularly can help reduce their visibility and prevent more stretch marks appearing. When choosing an AHA cream for getting rid of stretch marks you should consider its pH and the percentage of AHA that it contains.
