Why is car insurance costly for teens?

Getting cheap car insurance for teens is not always easy. It is much more difficult to get car insurance for teens as compared to older persons. And this obviously has to do with the age of teens. Studies have shown that teens drive cars under influence and they do not have enough experience to act in a timely and proper manner under pressure situations. Most insurance companies have designated 25 years as the age by which person become mature enough to be an experienced driver and can handle pressure situations. So it means teens have a long way to go before they can get car insurance easily and cheaply as well.

So this means getting car insurance for teens looks like a distant dream, right? Wrong. I agree that the chances of an accident become much more when a teen is in the driver's seat but you should not give up yet. Unless they drive how can they become experienced? The way to go is to make sure that teens understand their responsibility and make themselves good drivers. To do that you should not be paying a hefty amount as premium for their car insurance. Let us take a look at a few options you have to get cheap car insurance for teens.

1. If you have an existing car insurance policy in your name, add your teen in the same policy. This is the cheapest option in which your teen can start driving as an additional driver in your policy. This will increase your premium amount but overall you should be saving some money. Even if you have to add another car in your policy, you may get some discount to an additional car.

2. Make them drive an older car. Though your teen will not like this idea one bit, but this is an important option. New sports car is going to be a huge premium for you. Give your teen a car which is a bit older and not theft prone. Keep into consideration the horsepower of the car. Higher the horsepower, higher is the premium for the car.

3. Good grades - Studies have shown that teens with good grades are more responsible and handle the pressure situations better than teens with lower grades. As a thumb rule, teens with grades above 3.5 are preferred over teens with grades less than 3.0. Your insurance company may also give you some discount in case the teen has passed the drivers examination.

4. Safety features in the car also help to get some rebates in insurance premium. Not only they protect your teen from untoward accidents, but also help the premium down. The safety features like car alarm, extensible safety belts; double airbags will help you get the insurance easily and cheaply. Instead of buying a flashy new car which is costly, better spend some amount into some of these safety features.

5. Higher deductible - If you choose to keep the deductible on a higher side, there are good chances that insurance company will lower the premium amount. The flip side is that you will have to pay for minor bumps and scratches. This could lower your premium considerably.

6. Above all you should teach your teen to drive with responsibility. Make him/her understand that they are new drivers with a clean driving history. They should want to keep it clean. Once they understand the driving rules and etiquettes, it is pretty easy getting cheap car insurance for teens.
