If you're shopping for a bunkbed, chances are that by now you're realizing you underestimated how hard it would be. It seems like there are unlimited styles, designs, and materials for bunkbeds out there. How can you be expected to choose the right one for your needs?

But relax. It's entirely possible to get a bunkbed you and your kids will love for an excellent value. You need to know what's available in bunbeds first, and then you need to ask yourself the right questions as you browse the stores.

These are the most critical things to ask when it comes time to buy bunkbeds.

What Are the Bunkbeds Going to Be Used For?

There are two categories of people that are most likely to use bunkbeds. One is siblings sharing a bedroom, and the other is undergraduates trying to maximize space in their dorm room. It goes without saying that buying a bunkbed for one sleeper will be much different than buying for two. Single people usually love loft beds because they open up so much floor space. Instead of a bottom bunk there is just open space to be used for studying space, furniture, or whatever else you want to put there. If the bunkbed is for two siblings close in age, however, a twin over twin model is probably more what you had in mind. If one is significantly older, a twin over full model might make both siblings satisfied.

Do Looks Matter to You?

You need to ask whether the most important feature of a bunkbed is aesthetics of functionality. There is no right or wrong answer; it just depends on your situation. Of course you can find a bunkbed that looks great and works perfectly for your needs, but you need to have your priorities straight when you go shopping. If you have many children and want the bed to last a long time, it would be in your best interest to pick a solid, durable bunk regardless of looks. If you redecorate or move the bunk to another room, a fresh coat of paint on the bunkbed will make it fit in well. If you really want a perfect complement to the decor of your kids' room, pay careful attention to the looks of the bunkbed you purchase. For example, a room decorated in primary colors would call for an equally colorful bunkbed instead of a monochromatic wood bunkbed.

How Much Do I Want to Spend?

Your budget will obviously have a large say in the selection of bunkbeds you can seriously consider buying. The most inexpensive models are usually simply designed twin over twin models made of unfinished wood. More high-end models usually have advanced features like a bottom bunk that folds out into a futon and so on. A good rule of thumb is to compare the price tag of the bunkbed to its value to you in your life. Buying a bargain basement bunk may seem like a great idea, but if your kids are notorious for destroying even the sturdiest of furniture it might backfire. With bunkbeds, you usually get what you pay for. So if you hope for your bunkbed to hold up and stay looking nice for a long time, it's best to pay more up front and save in the long run.

Do I Care If the Bottom Bunk Comes Out?

Certain models of bunkbeds (usually the L-shaped models) give you the ability to remove the bottom bunk and storing it away when not in use. If you anticipate using this bunk on a regular basis, it wouldn't make sense to pay extra for this feature. But if this bunk is for one person who prefers the top bunk or if the lower bed will only be used occasionally, it might be worth looking at.

Ahh, reminds me of my childhood. I had to share one similar to my sibling. It's a lot of fun being on the top bunk.

Bunkbeds have changed since I was a kid. I slept on the bottom and we used the top for company since the ladder wasn't attached. These new ones look safer than the old ones.
