Getty Villa

The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, California, USA, is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria.

The Villa is frequently and erroneously said to be in the city of Malibu, but most of the site is actually in the City of Los Angeles in the community of Pacific Palisades. In fact, the Malibu city border begins a mile west of the Villa. The museum itself perpetuates this error, to the irritation of Palisades residents.

Movie and Radio Museums--Who Has What? - Museums everywhere slug it out for dibs on artifacts. Sometimes their fights make the front page--as when Italy went after the J. Paul Getty Museum, threatening its former curator with jail because of certain treasures that Italy feels were acquired illegally (looted and sold on the black market, IOW). Museums that deal with show biz memorabilia have it even harder. They're competing with EBay auctions, superstars and their families (and maybe their lawyers!) and big money collectors like the Hard Rock Cafe. The Los Angeles Times ran a story on October 26 about the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's entertainment collection. The Times links have a habit of disappearing, so I won't use it.

Getty Museum, a Must See in L.A. - So many choices in Los Angeles...what to do? Feel like a picnic, with ocean views, high on a hillside, but without traveling out of the city? Go to The Getty. Feel like surrounding yourself with masterpieces from antiquity or from just last century, but still want to experience L.A.'s great outdoor lifestyle? Go to the Getty. Feel like being astounded by one of the 20th Century's most unique architectural accomplishments? Go to the Getty. Feel like fine dining...in one of L.A.'s gourmet restaurants, this one with walls of glass looking out over the Pacific? Go to the Getty.

10 Must See Museums In America - A place dedicated to the muses, that’s how the ancient Greeks defined the word museum. In today’s world museums exist in many interpretations in all corners of the world. With stunning art collections in classic museums such as the Prados, Louvres, British Museum and the Hermitage, Europe is undeniably the center of the museum’s world. However the United States also contributed many very noticeable museums to the humankind, just think of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim in New York or the Getty Center in Los Angeles. There are fascinating museums of natural history, military history, antiquities, and open-air museums. The country is so huge and culturally diverse, that you could easily spend a lifetime seeing just a fraction of the museums America offers. Here is a short list to start you on your way.
