Theories about ghosts are mainly taken from stories that concern local hauntings. Hauntings are really just ghost stories, but don't become recognized until they are recorded by organizations like the Ghost Research Society. In some cases, ghost videos are actually recorded to bolster believability that a haunting occurred. Famous ghost stories like the Amityville Horror are genuinely scary until they are verified by people like a ghost tracking organization who has the real resources needed to compile accurate information that will scientifically provide proof that a particular location has paranormal activity.

This is very important, because ghost stories are usually tied to a geographically haunted place. The first theory about ghosts that a psychic or a professional ghost hunter will come up with is that someone who died at a particular location is still emotionally attached to it. Most theories about ghosts also reflect the fact that any historical house will have a tragic and unexplained death that will have occurred there. A new home owner will initially ignore this kind of information, because when a family moves into an historical home, they understand that an old house will have different kinds of creaks and noises other than the ones they are used to hearing. No one wants to admit that they have purchased a haunted house. So, they ignore the problem at first because don't want to draw any attention to their new property. In some cases, paranormal activity can become so scary that a family will hire a psychic or a medium to get rid of the ghosts and when that doesn't work; they will hire a ghost hunter. This is a rare case, because hiring someone to record ghost activity in your new home can be frightening.

This is why most families who own old homes will try to dismiss the theories about ghosts as mainly myths and folklore. They will tell themselves that an older house is not necessarily haunted; it just may be a little more lived in. Not by spirits and demons that posses people and throw ectoplasm around, but by others human owners who have lived in the house before and moved out when they passed away. Experts will try to find and classify who ghosts are and what they are capable of, but they will be the first to admit that a cold feeling in a room may just be the start of a haunting. Theories about ghosts are definitely not for the faint of heart, because sometimes they are unexplainable.
