Tonight sees the opening the giant killer snakes season on Broadway. Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy introduces a coy, shy ostrich, a 'bully boy' frog, other unidentifiable creatures and even a violin playing tree. Fortunately giant killer snakes are no threat. Well, at least we assume that they are not.

This isn't the first time we've been entertained by these Giant Killer Snakes though. Remember the 'Snakes On a Plane'? The 2006 movie entertained us with a plane load of poisonous killer snakes of all sizes from giant to tiny which were used to kill a witness who was going to testify against the mob. This was meant to be entertaining but, to be honest, it makes me shiver. Snakes are not my idea of fun entertainment.

There have been awful stories about pet snakes being released into the wild, particularly in the Florida Everglades. These are usually pets that have grown too big to handle and their owners have released them into the wild. Some of these have grown in real giant killer snakes as they rampage through the native wildlife in the area and upset the natural balance of things.

TV reports showed gigantic pythons being removed from the glades. This has become so serious that the Burmese python has now been listed as dangerous to the environment and it is illegal to release them.

So, there you have it. Whether you like snakes or not, they have been very much in the news recently, for one reason, or another. Don't have nightmares about giant killer snakes, though!
