General Advice: Gifts That Will Show Appreciation to the Christmas Hostess
If you’re lucky enough to not have to cook this year’s Christmas dinner, than you’re lucky enough. But seriously, if you’ve been invited to dine with friends and family for the holiday meal, you’ll need to show your appreciation by arriving with a gift for the hostess. Your gift should be as thoughtful as the hostess’s invitation to you.
Your first option is to call the hostess beforehand to ask if there are any food or beverage items that you can bring to the dinner. Make sure you find out how many guests will be in attendance so that you bring the appropriate sized portion. Confirm what time the event starts and ask if the hostess would like you to arrive early to help with the preparations for the meal. Your contribution to the meal is a great way to show your appreciation to the hostess.
Gourmet baskets are also a good way to go. There are so many options when it comes to gift baskets. You can create a delicious bread basket that is piled high with French, rye and sourdough breads. Include olive oil for dipping and tasty spreads to slather on the bread. Another classy option is a wine basket. Find out if the hostess prefers red or white wine and buy a bottle for them to enjoy. Include some decorative wine glasses and a sampling of cheeses from all over the world. With the emergence of a variety of organic products in the last several years, another option is to create a basket of organic fruits and jellies or teas and coffees. Include some holiday spreading knives or some attractive mugs to round out the basket.
Visit a flower shop or a garden nursery and look for a festive live plant. Poinsettias are an obvious choice for the holiday season, but there are many other options out there. Plants that have red berries (holly for instance) would spice up any holiday décor. Or, purchase a live wreath and tie red, green and gold bows to it. Don’t forget to include an over the door wreath hanger so that the hostess can display the wreath immediately.
Most likely the hostess has already thought of (and purchased) her centerpiece for the dining room table. However, elegant candlesticks will complement any centerpiece the hostess has chosen. Bring a variety of candles so that the hostess can choose which candles will harmonize with the color scheme of her decorations.
An ornament for the hostess’s tree is also a nice gift idea. You can purchase a keepsake ornament that has the year printed on it, or you can personalize an ornament with the hostess’s last name. You could also choose an ornament that meshes with the hostess’s hobbies or interests.
The hostess of the event has definitely spent all day in the kitchen preparing the meal for her guests. Her preparations might have included messy ingredients and accidental spills. In the future, if she has an apron, she won’t have to worry about rushing to change her clothes before her guests arrive. A nice complement to an apron is a set of matching kitchen towels. These gifts can be decorated in the theme of the holidays.
A gift for a hostess doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be considerate. Your goal is to honor your hostess for extending the invitation to come into her home and sit at her table. And although your gift will be a selfless expression, chances are it will increase the likelihood that you’ll be invited back!
