We all want to show our loved ones how important they are in our lives. Finding gifts for elderly relatives is often the final item to check off for Christmas lists. It can become a challenge to shop for older adults- they have what they need- OR often won't tell you even if they do need new socks or shoes. What do you buy? Several factors should be considered. First their activity level; and mental capacity. A recent retiree may be more active than when they were employeed. An 85 year old may be at home in need of mental stimulation and company.

Coffee, Tea, or Snack Basket - Many seniors ( and their grandkids) love coffee and cookies. A tastefully arranged gift basket with coffee, or tea, and cookies is great idea. Be sure to remember if your senior likes coffee or tea (regular or decaf) and if they have any special medical conditions (allergies or diabetes) when selecting cookies. This option is great if your loved one lives across the country- Everyone enjoys getting a gift delivered.

Gift Cards-This idea is a win- win for the giver and receiver.  If you choose to give an older adult a gift card to a favorite restaurant or their favorite discount store- you can even choose a gift card for an online store. Make sure that their is no expiration date. Think of this as a treat they normally would not buy for themselves- a location they might not normally be able to afford on a limited retirement budget. 

Socks and house slippers- Keeping feet warm becomes more challenging with age. This gift idea for an older adult will be put to use on the first cold day of the year.  Specialty socks can become expensive; Socks can be purchased for diabeitcs; socks can be purchased to aid in circulation and there are fuzzy socks for elderly who have a sense of humor about their feet.  House shoes need to be well fitted- not worn out- this can increase fall risks; keep their feet warm and toasty and make sure they are able to put the slippers on without assistance.

Board Games, Dominoes, Cards- Many senior adults enjoy getting together with friends. My mother is retired but is always up for learning a new game to take back to her "gang". Mexican Train is a favorite at her ladies church group along with Bunco. Checkers, an ew deck or large print cards are great pasttimes that will keep retired folks entertained with friends.
