Gift Ideas for a Six Year Old Girl

If you ask a six year old what she wants for her birthday, you're likely to get some pretty interesting requests. What I like to do with my daughter is to ask her what gifts she would like, but also to give her some suggestions.

  1. Books are a great gift for a six year old. She may be in Kindergarten or the first grade and learning to read quickly. Some favorite books for six year olds are E.B White books like Charlotte's Web and The Magic Tree House series.
  2. A Watch. Six is just about the age where kids learn to tell time. A fun watch that has hands is perfect. I really like the Swatch Crazy Me watch. It's colorful, fun and perfect for a six year old girl.
  3. Softball Mit and Ball. Teaching your daughter the fundamentals of catching and throwing is good for her development and it's a great activity for fathers and daughters to do together.
  4. Computer or Laptop. You may have a family computer, but if everyone spends as much time on the computer as we do, then each family member will want their own. There are lots of great educational sites like Noggin and Kidzui, plus Webkinz is pretty good as well that a six year old can master.
  5. Jewelry making kit. Six year olds love crafts. Even if she doesn't have her ears pierced (I think most six year old girls do not have pierced ears - ours doesn't), she may still love a jewelry making set for clip on earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Our six year old daughter asked for a cellphone, chihuahua, and pony. We didn't think these were practical or appropriate, so most likely it will be the watch this year.

How about coloring books and crayons? Those make great gifts for 6 year old!

Crayons and coloring books seem like they are more appropriate for a younger child like a three to four year old.

On my 5-year-old niece's birthday, I got her a Hananah Montana watch and she went crazy over it! I knew she liked H.Montana, but wow! It's amazing how much impact that young idol have on kids as young as my niece.

My daughter is just about six and she's been telling me how cool Hannah Montana is. I worry that she's a little too snotty to be encouraged, but a watch sounds like a nice gift. Glad she liked it.

Some good ideas there. I love your daughter's choice of gifts, so funny! I think that books are always a good gift; there is so much choice, and like you say, a six year old will probably get lots of joy from learning to read them themselves.

Wow a computer, really? My daughter is six. I'm a Mac girl, so I think new computer=$1000. Whats a cheaper way to get a kid into a computer?

A great way to get a kid a computer for a birthday gift or any occassion is to watch craigslist.  Find an inexpensive laptop for a one to two hundred and then wipe it clean and put a new operating system on it.  This will help on old computer function better. This should provide all the computing power a child needs...surfing the web and playing educational games.

You would be better off finding a desktop computer instead of a laptop. The desktop will take more abuse from a small child than a laptop. Laptops are quite a bit more to repair if something should happen to it. Plus you really shouldn't touch an lcd screen and a small child may touch the screen and ruin it.
