Mother's Day Gift Idea #1, Flowers

You can never go wrong with flowers. They're easy to order, and can even be delivered. And like all things Costco, they don't raise their prices on Mother's Day, so if you want that great price, swing by Costco and get your Mother some flowers.

Mother's Day Gift Idea #2, Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a great gift idea for mother's day, especially if your mother is a bit stylish. Sunglass styles change frequently, and last years pair may be a little out of date. Nothing like letting the mother in your life feel a bit hip with a great new pair of sunglasses.

eBay has a great selection of Sunglasses

Mother's Day Gift Idea #3, Handbag

Mother's go through handbags and purses like infants go through diapers. It's nowonder with all the stuff they stick in them that ends up leaking and streching them out. Then most mothers are running around so much that their handbags get beat up. Just between us, this is what I'm getting Robin.

Mother's Day Gift Idea #4, Professional Cleaning

I'm not always spot on with my gifts, and this one is a step above a vacuum, but I know my mom would have loved getting the house professionally cleaned. Getting the carpets steam washed, the floors waxed, the windows washed...a real deep clean. Do this one at your own risk.

Mother's Day Gift Idea #5, Nothing

The best gift I ever gave my wife was nothing for mother's day. I figured she wasn't my mother, so my only responsibility was to get my mother something. Silly me! I quickly found myself in the dog house and I needed a way out. So I pulled out the big guns. A VSD - "Very Special Day".

This involves several gifts and planning an entire day around her. It starts with a card in the morning, that declares it's her VSD, with a small gift. Then it's her favorite breakfast, followed by another larger gift, then its an activity - like a walk or massage, followed by another larger gift. Then you take her somewhere she loves to go, but you don't. Like shopping and give her unlimited budget (you may want to cap it, but I know my wife well enough that she won't go too crazy). Then it's home, where you draw her a bath and fill the room with candles and soft music. Then you put out on the bed a new outfit you picked out just for her. Then it's off to dinner at her favorite restaurant, or a place she's been dying to go. Then you close the night off with one more card. One more thing, don't forget to organize the baby sitter.

#5 is Risky, but Memorable

Now after several years of Mother's Day with my wife, the only one she remembers is the one I forgot. And the VSD that followed. I actually think that the disappointment followed by exceeding all expectations made it very memorable.

If you decide to try this, you have to let me know how it goes, and what you did for her VSD.

In the UK Mothers Day (Mothering Sunday) is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent which this year 2007 fell on March 7th for me the worry is over.

Sorry, Paul, but you really CAN go wrong with flowers. Looks like you're doing it right, but just to clarify - flowers from COSTCO good, flowers from Safeway bad.

@Lela, that's funny! Safeway jacks their price up on V day anyway.
