It’s a moment tattooed on your mind, like when Kirk Gibson hit that fastball into the right field stands off Dennis Eckersley in game one of the ’88 World Series. I remember when my wife told me. She bought a little life jacket. I thought it would hold one of those cool mini beer kegs, but no, it meant there was a baby on the way. Mini keg aside, it’s the greatest moment of any man’s life.

Being a first-time father is unsettling. You don’t know how you will react when first seeing the young one. You only hope it will be what is expected. Nobody ever worries about how the mother will react when she becomes pregnant, but most onlookers fret that the man will worry about the responsibility, the loss of his independence, or the next 18 years being planned out for him. Needless to say, he’s a man that deserves a gift. Let’s look at gifts perfect for the expecting father.

The new father will have less disposable income starting the day he learns he and his wife are expecting. Little things mean a lot to men. A subscription to MLB.com so he can watch any professional baseball game he wants will help him get through the countless nights his pregnant wife goes to bed before eight. He will also need high speed internet in order to catch the play by play.

The expectant father is also in need of knowledge. He may not be completely aware, but his life will change from sunup to sundown and all time in between. His life will change from the day his wife becomes pregnant because his wife’s life changes. They may have enjoyed going out to bars or restaurants and planning beach vacations, but once the baby is on the way both father and mother think about financial security and college savings plans. The expectant father needs gift cards to places he cannot afford to spend disposable income on once a child is on the way. Get him gift cards to sporting goods or liquor stores.

The new father needs help. How do you balance new fatherhood as well as a full-time job? He wants to be a full-time father but also needs to feed the monkey and pay the mortgage. He needs help organizing because before the blessed birth his biggest challenge was fitting in his evening run before ordering out for dinner. Now he needs to keep track of baby appointments, Gyno appointments for his wife and new insurance appointments. The dog still needs to be groomed, the car still needs to be serviced and dad’s cavities still need to be filled. The new dad needs a new electronic organizer. Buy him a new cell phone that can double as an organizer. He has enough gadgets to keep track of. Do the research and find a phone/PDA that will work for him.

If you are reading this anytime from 2008-2010, then you’re buying a gift for a new father who had his formative years in the mid to late 1990s. He deserves the complete set of one our greatest family sitcoms. He can learn from one of our great American fathers and learn what we are capable of as a father, both the good and the bad. Buy him the complete DVD series of Married with Children. Al Bundy taught us that while our greatest personal glory may have gone down on our high school football fields, our greatest accomplishments are shared with our Peggy’s raising a family – no matter how much heartache our Kelly’s and Buds’s cause.
