Having It All

Some babies are just hard to shop for. Maybe it’s the first-born child who’s been spoiled with clothing and toys, or maybe it’s the youngest child who has more hand-me-downs than he or she will ever need. Whatever the case, you don’t want to buy something for a child who already has too many of that same item. Following are some gift ideas for the Baby Who Has Everything.

Diapers

A few years ago a baby shower hostess requested that all the guests bring diapers as a gift.  That’s when I found out diapers are expensive!  You’ll want to ask the baby’s parents about the size and brand, but you can be pretty sure that the Baby Who Has Everything still needs more diapers.

Personalized Gifts

Even the usual gifts, like books, blankets, and bibs, become uncommon when they are personalized with the baby’s name. Depending on where you live, personalized clothing might be risky, since you don’t want strangers to know the child’s name, but a simple monogram should be safe, even for outerwear.

Baby Doll or Train Set

Don’t be afraid to cross gender boundaries.  I’m not suggesting a Hello Kitty hair brush for a boy, but even boy toddlers are interested in other babies, so a baby boy doll makes a nice gift.  It’s more socially acceptable for girls to enjoy traditional male activities, so consider something like a train set for a female toddler.  On the other hand, giving a girl a football might confuse her parents.

Shoes

Some babies like to put their feet in their mouth.  My baby nephew chewed up so many pairs of shoes that his parents stopped buying him new ones.  Maybe a baby on your list is about to chew through his last pair of shoes.  Save his parents some frustration, and buy him a new pair.

Savings Bonds

If the baby’s parents are spending a lot of money on clothing and toys, they may have trouble saving enough for college.  Savings bonds can be bought for as low as $25, and every little bit helps.

Next Season's Clothes

If the toddler is the oldest child in the family, she may not be receiving a consistent flow of hand-me-downs.  In this case, it’s great to buy clothes that are a size too big, because that’s one thing she probably doesn’t have yet.

The Next Big Thing

Another gift the Baby Who Has Everything might not have yet is the item that just came out on the market.  Clothes, stuffed animals, and wooden toys made of organic materials are a recent trend that’s catching on.  Baby clothing bouquets, consisting of clothes that are rolled and folded to look like flowers, are also gaining popularity.  To be extra trendy, buy a bouquet with only organic cotton clothes.  And don’t forget to buy them one size too big.

Ready, Set, Shop!

Those are my suggestions for the Baby or Toddler Who Has Everything. I’ve got four toddlers on my Christmas list, and they’re all getting items from this article.

I like the idea of the savings bond. Classy and shows you care about the baby's long-term well-being. Thanks!

I found other articles that has great gifts. They include a Lamaze cube, an O'ball, Lego Quattro, magazine subscriptions of the World Wildlife Fund (3 different magazines geared towards three different age groups), National Geographic Kids subscription, FunFusion and other art kits from hobby stores. They are all quite inexpensive and easy to get.
