The Kilt

What is a kilt?

A kilt is a garment for girls and Scotsmen that reaches to knee length. Further  the classic kilt is simple to identify by its tartan, which is also known as plaid, it's pattern and it's deep pleats.

In Scotland, the kilt is considered  formal wear for the true Scottish men, but men may wear them on just casual occasions if they wish.  In the 1990s, a number of modern adaptations of the kilt, like  the Utilikilt, arose, popularizing this style for a much wider audience.

Kilt history  is complex. The plaid, a garment which was in history wrapped around the mid-section and tossed over the shoulder by the Celts.

In time, Celtic villages developed unique  styles and fashions for sporting these garments. Pleated clothing was  also worn by other Northern European peoples, possibly because they aided the wearers in remaining warm in bad weather.

The actual word “kilt” refers to the idea of  “ tucking  clothing up around the body,” which  was exactly how the first kilts were worn. Today's kilt  appeared around the 1700s, as a wraparound ruffled garment which clipped on, instead of  being belted and then  tucked. This type of kilt was much simpler to handle than the earlier variations, and it hence became popular.
