Oven cleaner is considered to be one of the most toxic products in a household. Most contain ammonia or lye and can cause respiratory problems along with a host of other health issues. And the dangers don't just occur when use the caustic cleaner, the release of harmful vapors continues to be released when you turn on your oven several times after the initial cleaning!

Ovens are not meant to be immaculate, in my opinion, and I've been cooking seriously for over 15 years. It is a vessel for cooking and if you are a frequent home chef such as myself, you'd have to clean that beast every week to keep it shining! Even if there is black stuff stuck to the walls of your oven, it's carbonized and sanitary.

This is what I do (once a month, maybe): baking soda and sea salt and a little liquid. It forms an abrasive paste that takes off a majority of the hardened black stuff. Then I get a wet cloth and wipe it down. Does my oven look spotless afterwards? Absolutely not. So I guess I won't win the "1950's Homemaker Award." But guess what? I contributed to a better environment and don't glow in the dark!
