Glass shelves are a popular feature in many modern homes. Many decorators and interior designers choose them over other common shelf styles such as wood, plastic and metal because of their chic, minimalist appearance and simple, hassle-free fitting. In these cases they are often used with lighting features to highlight the items on display.

Manufacturers and retailers should be able to tell you how transparent, or see through, a particular model of shelf is. Common names which are used to describe the transparency, thickness and colour of particular shelf models include terms such as Frosted Glass, Clear Glass, Black Glass, Green Glass and Blue Glass. Another alternative to the “floating shelf” style talked about before, is the “suspended shelf”. Although they work fine on walls such as brick, “floating shelves” are often problematic when they are installed on non-solid walls, such as plasterboard. For this reason “suspended shelves” offer the perfect solution. Rather than being fitted to the wall like a “floating shelf”, they use thin steel cables to suspend them from the wall or ceiling, and they are suitable for all wall types, including plasterboard.
