Glassine envelopes are made out of glassine
paper. Being pressed through rollers many times creates this paper’s thinness.
This process is called calendering and since the glassine is put through the
rollers so many times it is called super calendered.
Glassine Envelope Paper
The paper that these envelopes are made out of is very thin and translucent. It has the same thinness as wax paper. The paper is also grease resistant. These envelopes don’t commonly come in a variety of colors. They come in a translucent white. They are great for things that you might worry would stick to the paper of a normal envelope. They acan also prevent damage from thing being spilled onto them because they are slightly water resistant. The envelopes are typically un gummed.
Glassine Envelope Uses
One of the great things about glassine envelopes is that they will not harm the contents of them. They are acid free so they are great for archiving things. The paper is also approved as food safe so they would be great to hold cookies or food favors. If you want to be able to protect photographs, film negatives or artwork and still be able to see the content glassine envelops are a great way to be able to do that. These type of envelopes are also really great for stamp collecting for these reasons. The fact that they will not damage the stamps is an invaluable benefit for the stamp collector. Stamp hinges are also made out of glassine.
