Glenn Beck is a Pathetic Loser and Lou Dobbs has Got to Go
67
Yeah, I don’t really think it will happen quite that easily either. You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true.. Ahh, a news media world without Beck and Dobbs.
The truth is that I happened to notice that a fair portion of my readers were finding me by searching the term ‘Glenn Beck is a Pathetic Loser’. I have never used that specific term –in print- so I found it interesting. I don't quite understand how it is that people searching that particular term happened to stumble upon my hubpages articles.
Far be it from me, however, to not deliver to potential readers any worthy story they wish to hear, and certainly ‘Glenn Beck is a Pathetic Loser’ is a cause I felt I could take up. Then I figured I may as well throw in Lou Dobbs as well, and kill two cuckoo birds with one stone. Ahh, a news media world without Beck and Dobbs.
It is a very sad state of affairs in American broadcasting when major news outlets keep an in-house nut job on staff, and yes I know that I am openly calling Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck nut jobs. It’s not a nice thing to do. Name-calling and all that, but they’re nut jobs, loony birds, wackos, and totally delusional idiots.
And they hold positions of influence over a significant portion of American adults. It speaks loudly of the loss of integrity and noble purpose in the world of journalism.
It also amplifies the very real fact that many Americans are hopelessly under-educated, and rather out of touch with reality. That’s the real scary part, as evidenced by our August town hall meetings fiasco. If Americans weren’t this naïve, then pundits like Beck and Dobbs would have no audience.
Thomas Jefferson, still my favorite president ever, once said "The information alone of the people at large can make them the safe, as they are the only, depository of our religious and political freedom." Despite his own personal problems and headaches caused by the newspaper stories of his day, he was a strong believer in freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
Yet what good does the press do when it stops disseminating pertinent news and information and focuses instead on offering popular sound-bytes and feeding the public with rants and sensationalism? It creates a misinformed public, as evidenced by our August town hall meetings fiasco.
While statistics uphold the theory that believers in news myths and propaganda are largely under-educated, there is something more to it all than that. After all, some of them actually can spell and produce grammatically correct, properly formed sentences that are even coherent.
Perhaps some of the pundits the like of Beck and Dobbs spew their vile falsities for the sheer purpose of creating followers. I think it’s safe to say that CNN’s president Jon Klein allows Dobbs to keep up his divisive rants for exactly that reason. At the same time, Dobbs himself I’m sure feels perfectly justified in his extremely hateful views on immigrants, though he must realize the lunacy of his birther claims.
It indicates a fierce, ideological attachment to a cause or belief system that allows a certain lassitude in objectivity. An enemy of my enemy is a friend of mine sort of philosophy. A man who has been in journalism for thirty-some years ought to know better, does know better, and yet chooses to promote a false story anyway. A man who has been in journalism for thirty-some years ought to know better than to complicate real issues by spreading his message by means of spewing hatred. Why, then? What has happened to Lou Dobbs?
The world is changing. I applaud Mr. Dobbs for his ability to walk away from the Republican Party, and on some issues I agree with him. He stands up for the American middle class, and I appreciate that, and believe in his sincerity in regards to those issues. The problem with Dobbs, I believe, is that his vision of the American middle class is totally white. While he’s grudgingly willing to make room for some upwardly mobile minorities, he seems stuck on the principle that they remain minorities.
There is no other explanation for his intense and obvious hatred of President Barrack Obama, and his long perceived disdain for welfare programs. There is no other explanation for his irresponsible reporting of the immigration issue.
A journalist ought to be able to effectively report on issues in an in-depth manner without allowing his own prejudices to color his reports or to be perceived by the public. Lou Dobbs oozes with prejudices, and that touches a chord in his audience.
Glenn Beck never was a journalist, and so we can’t be disappointed by his lack of journalistic ethics. We can wonder at CNN for ever putting him in the national spotlight in the first place, however. Self proclaimed rodeo clowns don’t belong on news shows, even though his move to the Fox network did make it seem a little more appropriate.
But again with Beck we see this supposed championing of middle white America and this obvious distrust of and disdain for minorities. Indeed, the obvious disdain of both Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs for minorities really says something about them. They don’t seem to care what minorities think of them, or to seriously consider the viewpoints of minorities.
If America was made up entirely of white middle class families and rich people, then there would be no problem with Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs. But we are so much more than that. If Beck and Dobbs were professional enough to effectively report on the issues which concern them in an objective manner, then there would be no problem with them. They can editorialize, but they shouldn’t do so in by promoting falsities and hatred.
So do we boycott, do we write letters, what do we do? Yes, we boycott. It expresses our own disapproval of the tactics and the content, which lets the less informed but generally sane public viewers realize that there is a problem.
It won’t make these people go away though. The prejudiced, white, lower middle class is scared, and feels cornered. Like any beast it is attacking its perceived enemy. It’s in a frenzy. Soon enough, like a child, it will wear itself out if we stand our ground. A good percentage of it will die of natural deaths in the next twenty years anyway.
So to the searchers of ‘Glenn Beck is a Pathetic Loser’, yes, he is, and so is Dobbs. Be patient with them, and tolerant of their intolerance, but keep on talking. The only way we fight misinformation is with rational truth.

On April 2, 2009 Glenn Beck compared President Obama to the Nazis, on Aug 20, 2009 he alleged he was a Communist. Dobbs performs similar acts, though with more subtlety and fewer tears. My point being is that Stalin sent fascists to Siberia and Hitler sent Communists to Gulags and death camps. The two systems of government are ideologically opposed.
I have heard right wing commentators and the "average Joe" say our President was a Communist, Fascist, *and* Socialist--at times within the same rant.
Which obviously proves your points about the uneducated. They seem to think that these words are interchangeable, though anyone with a decent dictionary or knowledge of history can quickly determine that they are not. But what can we expect from people who use words that they do not understand.
Great Hub as always, TC.
OMG loved it! While flipping to watch Kieth Olbermann or Rachel or someone I like watching, I accidentally found myself listening to Beck for a minute - he is way over the edge, and what's with the evangelical thing he is now way into? It looks like he's in need of a straight jacket!
Anyone that has an evangelical bent needs a straight jacket? Should I have my size ready for one? I understand not seeing eye to eye with his politics but I have heard his "evangelical thing" and I don't see it as so way out. I think he really feels strongly about his faith. It is not a religious show. I think that "flipping" to see him is the problem. Watching is not as bad as an isolated moment that may go with a preconceived notion about him, in my opinion. Did anyone want my opinion? I'm sorry. You guys are cool. Couldn't help commenting. Blessings.
Sarah, check out this video that was posted this afternoon on Alternet, if you can stand it. It's a compilation. Sort of a greatest hits compilation.
Eh it won't let me embed it, not even in the hub, but here's the link. And I was mistaken it's crooksandliars not alternet.

In retrospect, I should warn you that it's just a 17 minute waste of time.
You hate hearing the truth.
TC,Apparently you missed my Hub "Glenn Beck is a Pathetic Loser." As far as I know I'm the first one to call him that. Your hub is much more thorough than mine. Great job. Maybe I'll do another called "Lou Dobbs is a pathetic loser" and Joe Wilson is a pathetic loser.
Yes, Ralph, I didn't see that one. I guess that explains the connection. Seen it now though, and your hub is definitely more thorough. I belatedly realize I added nothing to mine to justify the statement.
Well done hub, of course I agree with the title. But Conservatives could do one of their own about Keith Oberman. But you point out a sad truth, the media is on the edges now, instead of in the middle telling the facts.
Nice hub.
As I commented previously, Olbermann is equally partisan, but he has 60 IQ points on Beck.
ThingsConsidered..Great read.. might I point out that the one thing you did not mention was money. I heard some where that Limbaugh gets something around 37 million a year (urban myth?) So my thinking is that these guys know exactly what they are doing, and news organizations long ago gave up taking a loss for the sake good news to follow a profit model that allows controversial figures willing to sell their souls to get on the air. More frightening than the ignorant masses willing to keep these guys in their private jets are the truly brilliant people behind propaganda movements willing to use their gifts to herd the intellectually deficient into cultural corrals. (Say that three times fast)..
The racial component is alive and well, but greed, greed, greed is the ultimate enemy. People like to get their buttons pushed (emotion sells), and sad to say there's money in it. Beck, Limbaugh, Dobbs, Oberman, Dowd, that right wing blonde woman (what's-er-name?).. the late great Novak all found success this way. (I should be so lucky) And it ain't going away any time soon.
Can we make a difference?... Every day.
DonnieBoston...Come on man, you gotta bring more than that. For instance, Beck went through surgery not too long ago and spent a lot of on air time complaining about "our terrible health system". Now he's talking about "the best health care in the world"..Which is it?
DonnieBoston, you wouldn't know the truth if it bit you on the ass.
“they must find it difficult, those who have taken authority as the truth, rather than truth as the authority”
… G. Massey, Egyptologist …
You're quite correct Things Considered but bringing yourself down to their level simply gives the ill-informed more ammunition.
Wow, I didnt realize there were so many living brain donors. You guys just keep marching in lockstep with your master.
The people who listen to Glenn and his radio and TV cabal have their people eating, and advertising them in whichever way they can. Sad, as a civilization, you'd expect that we are not only more civilized, but more learned. But I see it like that's not the case. Well, its either you raise ratings and viewers and make the knuckleheads to believe that they are now the American majority, or the networks will find someone to do the job. That sounds easy, so long as you have a couple of talking heads trumpeting it over and over that we are in trouble and so on, then you end up having some air heads making it their mantra. Glenn beck and his coterie are sure they are changing the American discourse and their 'little' masses are convinced that their triumph is inevitable and are succeeding. Such delusions of grandeur abound in the land....
"Tackle This:" If you can, LOL. 1) 11/04/2008 was NOT about history having been made. If it were, the honorable Alan Keyes, would have been seeking re-election. Ha, touche!
I am a Christian and proud to be an "Evil right-wing extremist." After all, we are responsible for most of the violent crime in the U.S. I am facetious and the "left" is, by and large, not all that well educated.
If they were, they would bring concrete numbers to arguments concerning abortion, violent crime etc, etc. Idiots.
According to Wikipedia, Beck had a troubled childhood, was diagnosed as ADHD, is a recovered alcoholic, completed only one college religion course in a Yale program for "non-traditional students" to which he was recommended by none other than Joe Lieberman. Olbermann is a graduate of Cornell, and Rachel Maddow earned a degree form Stanford in public policy and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford where she earned a doctorate in politics. While we're on the topic, Sean Hannity is a former bartender and college dropout from Adelphi and NYU. Believe it or not, Olbermann briefly dated Laura Ingraham. (At least he didn't date fellow Cornell grad Ann Coulter!)
I like Joe Lieberman. I believe he would have been the best choice the Democratic party could have made in terms of a presidential front-runner. They didn't stick with him and they look foolish for not having done so.
By the way ADHD "diagnosis" is overrated.
Glenn Beck gives us the ruth about our gov't. The other medias are biased toward Obama and all the wasteful spending. So what if Glenn is rich. i'd rather hear the truth and i am not ignorant. i am conservative. I want our Country back I don't want a socialiatic gov't, or marxist gov't.
Lou Dobbs has been apprehended by U.S. Customs, acting on a tip from within the Mexican-American community, and deported as an illegal alien. Dobbs, aka Luis Miguel Salvador Aguila Dominguez, has been living in the U.S. illegally since 1961. http://www.theonion.com/content/news/u_s_deports_l

You read my mind - after watching this youtube clip last night I woke up wondering how Beck got his own show, and isn't it actually dangerous to have a nut-job in such a position of power?
