Review of Book and a Call to Action

I recently finished reading Glenn Beck’s new book, “Common Sense.” When I picked up the book I did not know what to expect. I thought it might just be pro-conservative or anti-liberal, but I was completely wrong. Mr. Beck wrote a book that took shots at both sides equally, and instead of focusing on a political ideology, he focused on Americans. He looked at how Americans are becoming increasingly frustrated with the government and held everyone accountable.

After I finished the book, I thought long and hard about the message behind it. Glenn Beck was right about everything he said in his book. Americans are angry and are tired of being taken advantage of. I have a degree in political science and looking at what has been going on in this country objectively, I concur with his analysis. Over the past six months, government has grown at a rapid and alarming rate. Private companies are getting bailouts, taxpayers are buying car companies, energy taxes are being proposed on all Americans, and we are on the precipice of having government run healthcare. Now some people prefer this big government, socialistic model, but the majority of people do not. “Common Sense” realizes that people care about their job, their home, their family, and government expansion and corruption is not wanted.

Most people of a liberal stripe automatically dismiss Mr. Beck as a partisan hack. Well, they certainly are entitled to their opinion, but this book has nothing to do with partisan politics. Recently a reporter went into the streets of New York City and read passages of the book to liberals, without telling them the author. They agreed mostly with what was said, then reacted angrily that Glenn Beck turned out to be the author. Mr. Beck is a conservative, but this book does not preach that ideology at all. From what most polls show, maybe 20% of the American populace would disagree with what “Common Sense” says, but the vast majority would agree with the premise of the book.

I have not been happy with how things have been going and how they are going. This book struck a chord with me because I don’t think many people are happy with what is going on in our government. The blame lies with our elected officials in Washington, who often forget who they work for. At the same time, the blame also lies with us since we elected them in the first place. “Common Sense” is a wake up call to America to not sit idly by any longer as things happen around us that we do not agree with. I think that this book may be a rallying cry for many people, from all walks of life, who do not like what they see and have long been quiet about it. While I pay close attention to politics personally, I never stood up and made my voice heard loud enough about what I do not agree with. After reading this book, I have no doubt that I will be much more active and vocal about issues that I agree with and issues that I don’t agree with. I can only hope that more people will read this book, stand up, and join the fight.

My main issue with Beck is that he ignored 8 years of massive federal spending increase under Bush and didn't complain at all. Then, as soon as Obama was elected, the government is suddenly evil-incarnate. Sorry, but that's political hackery at its finest.

Chris did not read the book nor has he listened to or watched Glenn's shows for more than a few minutes; if at all. If he had, the comment he left would be totally different.

Buy and read the book folks! We must spread the word because we all have a responsibility, as American citizens, to educate ourselves and others. The schools are not teaching our kids what needs to be taught and the mass media is not reporting.

Thank God for people like Glenn that get the word out but it is ultimately up to us to make a difference!

Great post pmm349.

Hey Chris... I have been listening and watching Glenn Beck for at least 7 years now. He was a critic of the Bush administration and still is. He continues to point out damaging instances that occurred during the Bush years. Glenn calls it like it is. I have just started "Common Sense" so I am unable to comment on the book. However, I do know that he has always been a critic of both sides. He has acknowledged the massive growth under the Bush administration (the largest growth ever seen before Obama took office).

I have been a Libertarian for 15 years. It really gives me the benefit to sit on the fence and criticize both Democrats and Republicans. I can comfortably call it as I see it. I don't get the general backlash because I am not a member of one of the two major political parties. I grew up a Democrat, switched to Republican and now best identify with the Libertarian party. Although, I do not tow the Libertarian party line either.

If you are a democrat or a republican, I challenge you. I challenge you to take a step outside of your party (no matter which it might be). Try to take an objective point of view based upon what you truly believe, sort through the rhetoric and crap and really try to see what our elected officials are about. I think you will be surprised to learn that you have been duped by both along with the media that seems to have a purchase price to be bought by the highest bidder.

Finally, find common ground with your fellow Americans and agree on something, anything. Unite and realize that your liberties are truly in jeopardy unless you can agree with one another and start to fight for what is important to you both. (I am not talking about becoming violent. I am talking about making your voices heard.) It can be anything: the right to personal property, true freedom of the press, or the freedom to have your voice heard when you are about to be burdened with another huge increase in taxes.

I recently read Glenn's book and liked it, as I do his show. If more people applied a little more common sense to the decisions they make, personal, political or otherwise, we would all be better off.

I totally agree with what Kurt said. I had been coming to this conclusion for almost 17 years. The thing that was the last straw was the October 2008 bailouts supported by both McCain and Obama. Both major party candidates supported this massive fascist bailout. I decided I would vote Libertarian in the 2008 election. I soon found out that voting Libertarian was impossible in my state. West Virginia is one of several states that make getting on the ballot virtually impossible for anyone except the two major parties.

Has anyone else noticed that regarless which of these parties is in power nothing changes in a positive manner? They promise change but the results are the same. The middle class is dissappearing. Disparity in wealth is growing. Foriegn policy is the same (despite the manmer of discourse).

Are the Democrats and Republicans REALLY two different parties? I fear not, for they each serve the same master and that master is not The American People. It is BIG MONEY INTEREST, Global big money interest. These individuals and groups want to enslave the masses globally, and there very close to doing so.

So before it's too late (if not already) the American People better wake up and take back their government by throwing all these bums out and electing true representatives of American People's interest. Partisanism must be stomped out very quickly. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Last week, Glenn Beck called President Obama a “racist” with a “a deep-seated hatred for white people.” He slammed Olbermann for being scripted while he (BECK) reads the slam from a Teleprompter!! He falsely claimed that the salary of US Auto workers averages out to be $154 per hour. (http://mediamatters.org/research/200902190002)

Glen Beck says that that "people who hate America" — meaning progressives — are getting their houses burnt in California and falsely claims that "liberal science" is blaming global warming for "causing" the fires, when, in fact, scientists have stated that global warming contributes to the CONDITIONS that are conducive to fires.

Glen Beck makes cracks about Al Gore and alcohol while seeking compassion for his own alcoholism. He compares Islam to Wiccanism, and recommends that America engage China in a carbon emissions drag race.Glen Beck calls for bipartisan healing, then celebrates the burning of "America Haters'" houses, and talks about killing Michael Moore and Nancy Pelosi.

The man is an idiot.

That is all.

While I'm not a big Beck fan, I am a fan of Common Sense. Too many people only use thier heads as a place to store thier hats. Beck's theatrics are what turn me off but I understand the need to promote your position. Your piece is right on the mark. And BTW, one thing I have to give to Beck is that he takes shots at anyone that goes against Common Sense and his rules to live by. Unlike your hard core leftists who see no problem in anything thier side does. If ACORN is not illegal and immoral, what is? Great piece.

I think the conservative/liberal/democrat/republican/partisan/nonpartisan arguments are all largely irrelevant at this point, we're up a creek without a paddle and its time to start making some noise about it and fixing it, no matter who we can pin the blame on specifically for where we ended up.

I'm with you, Americans need to be more vocal about issues that matter to them and not lay back and expect the politicians to fix what they screwed up in the first place.

The book is unmitigated anti-intellectual drivel by a very poorly educated man who is very possibly emotionally unbalanced. Those that think this book make any degree of sense really must have slept through their History classes in High School and College. Once gets the sense, in reading "Common Sense" that Beck is extremely jealous of those who are better educated that he is, and who, in the process of gaining a more rounded education, learned how to think in a logical manner, an ability that Beck sorely lacks.

wolf132  says:

Claimsman,

Beck's book is not meant to be a masters thesis forging new ground in political intellectualism.

The purpose of the book is to communicate to the average citizen in simple unmistakable terms how America has drifted from the principles that made it great.

If you try to hold the book to any other standard, you'll miss what has made it a NY Times Best Seller for 4 consecutive weeks; The book communicates common sense political principles in a way that everyone can understand.

I want to get that book so bad, but I have no $$. (Unemployed...) But I will gain an income before too long. Right now, I am watching this week's special reports all week long on the Glenn Beck show, and I am terrified after having done some research on his ridiculous ideas and claims. Unfortunately, his ridiculous ideas and claims are all true. We are indeed in deep doo-doo America.

As a regular viewer of the Glenn Beck program and having read the book, it's easy to pick out the people that clearly are just here to attack him and have no idea what he actually says (Stacy, Claimsman). That just impassions people more, when they see mindless personal attacks that have no basis in truth against someone that is speaking truth. Stacy and Claimsman are desperately trying to to discredit him and his book because... well, it threatens with facts the liberal idiocy that they are holding onto so desperately despite the downward spiral the nation is in. The are trying to turn the fire house on the guy that is trying to save their house from burning. It's okay though, because people like most of us who read the book or watch his program see the attacks for what they are. By the book, read it, and give it to a friend.

PMM349, I was just wondering if you might elaborate on this last sentence of your review: "After reading this book, I have no doubt that I will be much more active and vocal about issues that I agree with and issues that I don’t agree with. I can only hope that more people will read this book, stand up, and join the fight."

What action do you plan to undertake and how much will you fight?

I'm not challenging you, I'm just genuinely curious. I just read the book in one sitting and was wondering what path of action I might take to make a difference as well.

family5mom1  says:

I too just got the book and am about half way through. I have been wondering through the whole thing, "what can I do"? I think I will start with really researching the candidates in every election. The change we want is going to come from getting rid of who is in Washington (on both sides) and putting in those who truly represent the REAL American! Enough of the runaway train. Lets get people in there who know how to drive it! As a nation it is time for us to take responsiblity for our own lives too. Lets get back to the pure, simple, basic life. The one where you work hard for what you have, and you see "honest" growth and progress in yourself and your community. How did we get this far from that?

I have read some of the comments on this page...The first one written by Chris especially rang my bell. What a moran. When is the American people going to realize that our Government is not run by the President. It's the goons on the Hill that is taking us to hell. The last three years of the Bush Administration was under Democratic Rule. HELLOOOO! It was those three years that lead us to were we are now economically and socially. Now we have a President that not only hates America, but hates Israel. God's word is being fulfilled as I speak. Nowhere in the Book of Revelations does it mention North America. Does that give anyone a clue as to where America is headed? We are no longer the super power we once were....and we are never going to be that power again. America and our left wing idiots on Capitol Hill have thrown God out. He's not coming back. He has even been thrown out of the Churches, because the churches aren't saying a word or taking a stand. They remain silent. Christ used to be the forefront of our hearts and minds. How else did we gain our freedom to start with. LUCK? I don't think so. I believe without a doubt God's wrath on America is just around the corner. Who knows, we may either be taken out or ruled by someone else......like China of example. They pretty much own us now, thanks to our wonderful Political Leaders. When we truly turn our backs on Israel it will be the beginning of the end for America. If you don't believe that, read Revelations. Those are God's people.............and they will be the last standing before Christ's return. Obama all but said we no longer support Israel. LOOK OUT AMERICA. For those of you that voted for change, get ready........Cause now you are going to get what you asked for.

I like his antics and he isn't for anyone politically except the American People. He's a light in the darkness and we are in an hour of extreme darkness. He gives me hope! For Real.

I agree with some things Mr. Beck says and some I don't. I think he goes about "spreading his opinions" wrong sometimes, but makes good points sometimes too.

If the govt. can keep Americans focused and arguing about all the people kicking up their heels and making a fuss about something then the govt. has free rein to be doing anything it wants because we are all too caught up in the drama and gossip...

Stay focused on the issues. Write to our leaders and reps. and tell them what WE think, both good or bad.

The whole Beck (and others) discussions are nothing more than a distraction to keep our eyes off the real ballgame.

erinaqua  says:

obviously, anyone who supports such a hypocritical idiot has a skewed view of reality. As a high school student, I am extremely concerned for the future of this country if the majority of people support Beck. There will always be different beliefs in our community, regardless of what politic party you are in. We don't need idiots like Beck, to tell America that they need to take charge of their own life.

Brian  says:

Chris, You're clueless. Beck was slamming the Repubs for their spending spree. You have no idea what you're talking about. Get informed if you plan to speak. Other wise, you just look like an idiot to those that are informaed.
