The Dallas Cowboys and the 2002 NFL Draft
64The Dallas Cowboys prepared for the 2002 NFL draft after finishing 5-11 in 2000 and 2001.The Cowboys had a first round pick for the first draft since 1999. For the second draft in a row, the Cowboys had nine picks. Players from southern universities had dominated the Cowboy picks over the last two drafts. How did the Cowboys do this time?
Round one
The Cowboys used their first round pick to select Roy Williams. He was a defensive back at Oklahoma. This pick has proven to be a great pick for the Cowboys. Roy became a starter in his rookie year of 2002. Beginning in 2003, he was selected to the Pro Bowl five consecutive times. He was picked first team all-pro in 2003. The 2008 season was his last as a Cowboy and he was limited to three games because of a broken arm. Roy will continue his career in Cincinnati for the 2009 season.
Round two
In round two, the Cowboys had two picks. Their first pick in this round was Andre Gurode. Andre was a guard at Colorado. He has been a starter for the Cowboys throughout his career. Andre became the Cowboys center in 2006. He has been a pro bowler the last three seasons. The Cowboys used their second pick in this round on Antonio Bryant. Antonio was a wide receiver at Pittsburgh. He played for the Cowboys in 2002 and 2003. He played in five games in 2004 before going to Cleveland.
Round three
Derek Ross was the third round pick for the Cowboys. He was defensive back at Ohio St. Derek was a starting corner back for the Cowboys in 2002. He played eight games in 2003 and finished the season in Atlanta. He ended his career with Minnesota in 2004.
Round four
The Cowboys picked Jamar Martin with their fourth round pick. He was a full back at Ohio St. Jamar started one game in 2003. He finished his career with the Jets in 2006.
Round five
Pete Hunter was the fifth round pick of the Cowboys. He was a defensive back at Virginia Union. Pete was with the Cowboys from 2002 to 2004.He played in thirty games as a Cowboy. Pete started six games for the Cowboys. His career ended after spending the 2006 season with Seattle.
Round six
The Cowboys had three picks in round six of the 2002 draft. Their first pick in the round was Tyson Walter. Tyson was a center at Ohio St. he was third Ohio St. player selected by the Cowboys in 2002. Tyson was with the Cowboys from 2002 to 2004. He played in thirty-nine games and had nine starts. The Cowboys selected DeVeren Johnson and Bob Slowikowski with their last two picks in this round. DeVeren was a wide receiver at Sacred Heart. Bob was a tight end at Virginia tech. Neither played a game for the Cowboys.
Summary
The Cowboys drafted much better in 2002 than they did the previous two years. None of their selections from 2000 are still playing. Only, one from 2001 is still active. Three players from this draft are still active. Only one is still with Dallas. Roy Williams and Andre Gurode are both quality players. Antonio Bryant is an average receiver. Once you get past these players the draft results were so-so. Which is not unusual for the bottom rounds. I would give this draft a grade of B.
