The earth is warming up faster than at anytime in the last 10,000 years with disastrous results on the climate patterns. Combined with this is the alarming rate at which plant and animal species are disappearing which plays an indirect but important role in the complex and interdependent equations which make up the natural balance of our ecosystem.

Why is the earth hotting up?

Basically because of more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than the earth is equipped to handle.Carbon dioxide has a role to play in the ecosystem: natural levels of CO2 trap heat from the sun and thus prevent the earth from getting too cold for life. But over the last century, due to a phenomenal increase in the use of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, which release CO2 the amount of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere has gone up by leaps and bounds. They had found out that the level of emission of CO2 now is 15 times more than the 1900 levels and still increasing in a alarming speed.

What are we doing to control global warming?

One obvious step would be to impose limits on CO2 emissions. Which is what the Kyoto Protocol tries to do. Kyoto protocol is to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was adopted in 1997, in the city of Kyoto, Japan. It contains quantified, legally binding commitments to reduce green house gas emissions by the industrialised countries.

Here the question may asked Why target the industrialised countries?

Several reasons, No.1: About 25 per cent of the world's population living in "developed" countries consume 80 per cent of the world's energy resources, including fossil fuels.

2.They also emit more greenhouse gases.

According to the data released by the international Energy Agency based in Paris, the G-8 countries account for almost half the world's CO2 emissions. So it is natural to expect the Industrialised countries to take the lead in cutting down emissions. The agreement that had been signed between 178 countries in 2001 in the Climate summit held in Bonn saw all this countries come to an agreement on the rules for the Kyoto Protocol. But how far this is being carried out is a big question after seeing the increase in the global warming every year.

The extinction of plants and animals also upsets the natural balance of the ecosystem. Bio diversity has become very little known. We do not know how many species of plants and animals exist today. Every day they say about 30 to 300 species are becoming extinct. Nobody knows the effect this will have on our ecosystem. As of now 1.7 million species of plants, animals and microorganisms have been identified, and it is estimated that the earth may have at-least 10-100 millions species according to the Report of the Secretary General of United Nations on Conservation of Biological Diversity. But the extinction rate, has raised a big question mark on every body's mind that how long the left out will survive.

There are things we can do in our won small ways. You can form nature clubs in your school, college, residence area, towns and in your work places, dedicated to preserving biodiversity.

You can start a nursery in your area where you can collect and grow sapling of as many different trees and plants as you can.

This way I am sure many types of plants and trees that are in the process of disappearing can be saved and more over there is a chance of making the entire earth green again, even if it seems to be a Himalayan task, we can try, because its only a tiny seed that makes a big tree. You can make yourself a seed and stand as a role model to others.

While the governments and countries battle it out over technicalities, you can do something now and save our earth, and be more proud you stood a warrior on saving your mother.
