Global-Warming: Fact or Farce?
75Global-Warming: Fact or Farce??
The WHO, this year had a theme on world Health Day, ‘protecting health from the impact of climate change'. The idea was to increase the awareness of health hazards of climate change.
These include the extreme weather conditions that we face now, like the extreme summers and winter in India, the drought, famine in one part of the world and floods, hurricane (Katherina) and dam bursts in other. These extremes evoke a lot of passion among people. With 24X7 news channels just a remote control away, which tend to sensationalize everything, the common man is left impressed by the numerous so-called-experts version that man is the culprit of all these changes, the global warming is the result of human species exploiting the mother nature of its resources.
Up to a few years back I was a strong supporter of the lets-go-green movement, but my eyes opened up when I read a novel by Michael Crichton "State of Fear", though it does seem odd to make a work of fiction as the base of the argument that global warming is a farce, but the fact that Mr. Crichton has written this book with so many scientific footnotes and references like any scientific article that it is hard to deny it. When I Googled the reference given at the back, my case became stronger, that global warming is a big farce. The fact is that it is politically correct to support the theory that global warming is a real danger and caused by the increased energy consumption by the rising economies of India and China.
If I were to extend my argument to other so called ecological disasters, then the closest one has been the Sardar Sarovar Project and the role of NBA in it. It is a developmental project which was to cater to the water needs of millions of parched throats and farms in North Gujarat and Kutch, the fact that the media and the NGO's went against it was totally a jingoistic war cry and not based on facts. The fact that the displaced population should get there rightful rehabilitation should have been the focus of the NGO's rather than questioning the project itself.
Similar is the situation with global warming, there are too few facts that we know, oh yes the summers are getting hotter, but are WE responsible for it or has it been the trend through millions of years. Climate on earth still remains a big scientific mystery. We cannot predict volcanoes, flood, rains, earth quakes, tsunamis hurricanes, but we seem to have mastered the stock market.
During origin of life, Carbon dioxide was the crucial ingredient, and the lack of oxygen actually helped it. Since then CO2 has reduced to 0.03% of the atmospheric air. These changes took billions of years and are reason for our existence. Is man responsible for these changes also?
Similar case is with acid rain. We don't hear much about acid rain these days, but back in the 1970s it was regarded as one of the most significant environmental problems in North America. Sulfur dioxide from power plants and other industrial sources was thought to be mixing with rain and posing a mortal threat to our northeastern forests and lakes. A consensus formed that Something Must Be Done Now. Good policy depends on good information, however, so in 1980 President of US, Mr. Carter set in motion the largest scientific study in U.S. history to determine the scope of the acid rain problem and to suggest solutions. The government took eight years and spent $500 million on the acid rain study only to conclude in 1988 that the acid rain threat had been wildly over exaggerated. Not only was acid rain a minor problem, but where acid rain genuinely threatened lakes or forests, the problem could be treated cheaply for less than $100 million a year by simply treating acidified lakes and forests with alkaline compounds.
Karl Marx famously wrote that history repeats itself first as tragedy and then as farce, and with the global warming controversy history is repeating itself in ways that are both tragic and farcical. We are again told that the overwhelming scientific consensus is that catastrophic global warming is imminent unless we Do Something Now, though this is far from accurate. There are hundreds of reputable climate scientists who harbor doubts about the theory, or the prospective severity, of global warming. They are routinely vilified by the press, Vice President Gore, and environmentalists for their honest doubts.
But even if the catastrophic global warming hypothesis is true, does the answer require wholesale changes in the modern economy, costing potentially trillions of dollars? Are we about to adopt a trillion-dollar solution to a billion dollar problem? Since the problem is that greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, are there ways we might reflect some heat back into space? It turns out that this is a simple problem and not terribly expensive problem. As we find out every time a volcano erupts somewhere around the world, the climate is very sensitive to high altitude aerosols. Several physicists have calculated that we could remedy whatever global warming may be upon us for a few hundred million dollars a year by such simple techniques as additives to jet fuel that would provide reflective aerosols at high altitude from jet exhaust.
GUESS WHAT? THE ANTARTICA IS GETTING COLDER NOT WARMER
WORLD'S LARGEST FRIDGE:
Australian scientists navigate around Antarctic ice sheets. New sample data and satellite information show that the ice mass is getting colder, not warmer as had been previously thought. New data may affect political debate over global warming.
The Earth's polar regions long have been considered canaries in the coal mine on climate change - the first places to look, many scientists said, to learn whether the planet's temperature is, in fact, rising. Indeed, climate models generally predict that the heating of the atmosphere - precipitated by global warming - will cause the vast layer of ice that covers Antarctica to melt, raising sea levels and changing regional climate patterns by altering ocean currents. Two studies of temperatures and ice-cap movements in Antarctica suggest that the Southern Hemisphere's "canary" isn't going down without a fight - key sections of the ice cap appear to be growing thicker, not thinner, as previously believed. And the continent's average temperature appears to have cooled slightly during the past 35 years, not warmed.
Global warming like all climate changes are difficult to understand and prove. Some scientist have data that prove it others disprove it, it is like the clinical trials that we come across in conferences and journals, we don't know which ones to rely on.
The information bombardment of our times is not helping us either; the saturated and intoxicated mind tends to judge things in haste. It's like repeating the lies a hundred times, till everyone believes it. But the onus is on us to believe what we. It is said that "seeing is believing", but does it hold true in our times..... Think about it!!!

We could really argue about global warming till eternity, because people are so different in their opinions and there are power interests of oil corporations constantly present behind the scene. However, the nature is not going to wait and it has already started the process of devastating changes to humanity and to all other living species on this planet.
Yet, we are still arguing...it is or it is not?...it is or it is not?...
briannerose, Great comment. Latest data from Arctic shows that Arctic is getting colder, ice sheet is thickening too. Thanks for your informed inputs.
the fact remains that homo sapiens sapiens are the most devastating species on the earth...i agree that most of our problems have been created by us, but then the chosen FEW donot have the right to put fear into millions and take advantage of it... like what Bush said and did in Iraq, nobody found the WMD's but everybody was made to believe it and its fear was drilled into us. My idea of writing this article is not to defy global warming but criticise how our freedom to think and analyse has been corrupterd by a few.
I would say without doubt that global climate change is occurring, and I do believe that our ability to pour ton after ton of previously stored carbon back into the atmosphere is no help to the air we breathe.
Remember that this petroleum-based carbon has been out of circulation for a very long time. Putting it back into circulation, mathematically speaking, increases the amount of carbon above the surface of the Earth.
Yes, there are doomsday predictors out there, but to say Human Beings have had no effect on climate is simply false. The "so-called experts" have enough data to show that SOMETHING is going on, and where are the facts concerning the Arctic Ice Sheet? There are companies right now buying up land on the northern edges of Canada in expectation of a great thaw. That would be prime land for ports to export Canadian minerals and oil.
But the bottom line is that whether or not you believe Human Beings are partially the cause of climate change does not matter. If it is true, it will catch up with us. If it is not, we still need to try to understand what drives our global climate and we need to understand what role we play in any changes therein.
Deny all you want to, but if you are wrong, or if I am wrong, nature will correct one of us eventually.
Great hub, even though I respectfully disagree with your position and postulations.
Also great idea about Bush & WMDs - that much we agree on!
My hub on this topic is: http://hubpages.com/hub/Global-Warming-Fact-or-Fol
I hope you visit!
Chef Jeff I visited your Hub 'Global-Warming-Fact-or-Folly..." I am impressed with your research. It is long enough and ypou think 360 dgree, may I take some more time to read it completely. I will disuss further with you onyour Hub then.
Much of global warming is due to the fact that the sun is getting hotter. the climates on our fellow planets in the solar system too are warming. The sun is getting hotter (eventually it will burn itself out). Our globe is warming because our sun is warming.
Wow this is a serious health condition. Thanks for the tip.
Noting in this world is static. World is a dynamic equilibrium. Our planet is huge and has huge capability of absorbing changes in climate, increase in human number and mass. The population is incresing, their needs are increasing, food, energy, dwelling units, roads, transport everything you name..so more resources of earth are used and are under presuure. All these changes will change our planet as well to good or bad or just change.
Bethani, Just a comment to your comment. The sun will not burn out during the human history. If the sun burned itself out it would go supernova first. By the time we figured this out we would all be dead. Change is something that will happen no matter what.
All the changes and all the disasters on earth caused only by humane, not by nature it knows how to live and continue to live with volcano's, storms, and earth quakes. To balance itself with all what it has only it has equipped it self with all those four seasons. Its not complete continuous summer to dry us apart, its not continuous winter to drown us deep it knows how to adjust and it does that from the day of its birth. It is the changes created by mankind and our own unbalanced life style only is destroying our beautiful mother earth, nothing else causes the global warming than we and our actions do. even leave it as it is the sufferer is going to be human civilization not the earth, it knows how to adjust, at-least now we understand the seriousness of this issue and do something, by not doing things against nature, to save human civilization from global warming. It is not that the nature, is against us but we are against us.
By the way its a wonderful hub on a warming topic, Lord.
Nicely presented, MS. I don't feel qualified to declare Mother Earth as undergoing Global Warming, or entering the next Ice Age, but I do believe that everything we humans do affects the balance of our world and planet, in part at the very least.
When elements are thrown out of whack and not in harmony as they need to be to operate smoothly and normally, then obviously, there are going to be noticeable consequences regardless of whether it is humans or not that cause the imbalance. It is very sad though, when it affects lives.
Yes! Ms Shirley Anderson, it is sad.
You almost created a poem, here. Thanks for your emotionally expreesed comment.
After watching Al Gore's movie, I was truly shocked at how uninformed we really are, and how this has been kept a secret for so long. I'm doing my part now, and if we all change just one thing to lessen our carbon footprint, we can reverse this process over the years.
Mr MSMS what you have been talking is just rubbish, you are ill informed and talking half baked cooked up bullshit.
Is it a Hub or your ignorant ego, Rascal. Everywhere is enviorenment degraded and you are blind to it... you justify your blindness. You are doing a crime to humanity Bastard Shut up your bloody mouth.. batard
Great hub msms - don't listen to anyone that tells you otherwise!
Great hub.

good hub! Global warming is a fact by the way but humans are not totaly responsible for it. Humans are only a small part of it. The earth is a really old planet. It is bound to go through many changes. I live in Alberta and I can tell you that when I was younger the weather was more stable and yes there was more snow on the ground. Now the weather is unstable. Most of this is caused by green house emmissions and how people use the resorces of the earth. Example: You take a person's food away they starve. When humans drill for oil or other environmental stuff we are taking away the earths food. Thus it weakens the earth and it has to readjust to these conditions. Also you have the animals that thrive on the earth and than yes the volcanos. You need to look at the bigger picture than just the media and politicians. But do not be fooled humans are a part of what is going on too. Even if it is a small part. Small things can get bigger. Yes the earth has been warming over the past 200 years. The artic ice has been melting. I have not found one artical that says the Ice in the artic is getting larger. Any how good hub
