Joints:

Most people who have had a lifetime of vigorous exercise, or a job which includes heavy lifting or bending, have experienced some type of joint pain.

A joint is described as any area in the body where bones meet, such as the hip or knee.

Cartilage:

The bones of a joint are covered with a spongy material called cartilage, which cushions the bones and allows the joint to move freely without pain.

Cartilage that has become torn or thin can not protect the bones from touching, and the friction that follows causes pain and swelling of the joint.

What Is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine occurs naturally in the body and aids in the construction of cartilage by stimulating the production of glycosaminoglycans, which are the key structural building blocks of cartilage.

Glucosamine also promotes the transfer of sulfur into cartilage, which is another component necessary in the formation and repair of cartilage.

Natural glucosamine levels drop in the body as we age, which leads to gradual deterioration of cartilage and the joint.

Glucosamine may be effective in treating and possibly slowing the progression of osteoarthritis. This is a type of arthritis is caused by continuous wear on the joints leading to inflammation and eventual loss of cartilage.

The tissues most affected are the weight bearing joints, such as the knees, hips and the hands. I have undergone two massive reconstructive surgeries on my left knee due to a combination of karate, running, aerobics and work. Using glucosamine has kept me relatively pain free.

Glucosamine is not found naturally in food. Most supplements are derived from the chitin in outer shells of shrimp, lobsters, and crabs, although there are alternative forms available for those individuals allergic to shellfish.

Glucosamine is available in oral supplements as glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and n-acetyl glucosamine. These products come in tablet, capsule, and powder forms.

Glucosamine can be found as a mixture with chondroitin or minerals such as manganese. It has been reported that Glucosamine hydrochloride is absorbed more readily by the body.

Glucosamine is also available as an injectable form that your physician can insert directly into an arthritic joint.

As with any supplement, precaution should be taken if you suffer from diabetes, are taking anti-inflammatory drugs or use blood pressure medication. Always check with a physician first.
