Gmail adds arrow indicators to show importance of received message
67Google has added a new feature to enhance your e-mail management. It added “personal level indicator” feature in the form of arrows to indicate the importance of the e-mail you received, whether it is important enough to respond immediately or not.
A few months ago, Google added colored labels with filters to distinguish the e-mails received your in Gmail account and now it has added another feature that will inform you whether the e-mail received was addressed specifically for you or was sent to a group or from a mailing list.
It is called “personal level indicators”. Gmail adds arrows next to the messages as shown below:
A single arrow ("›") means the message was sent to you as well as to others, the double ("»") next to emails that are sent just for you. To see this feature you have to enable an option at the Gmail Settings tab.
Click “Settings” --› General --› “Personal Level Indicator” --› Choose “Show Indicators” --› Save
Once you done this you will know which of the e-mails you received are important to communicate right away and which aren’t.

Question same as Eileen?
Look for ward to your answer
Thanks Eileen and MrM. Google sees whether it is a group mail or not (when they see CC, then it realizes it is not just addressed to you) so it points one arrow, and for those who send personal mails just to you, it puts two arrow signs. Hope this helps.

What I dont understand is how they know which emails are important to us. They do not know who sends and which ones we want to receive.
