Georgia Bulldogs have been playing football for 116 years. As of January 2008 they have played 1146 games. Georgia's first football game was a home game against Mercer. The Dawgs won 50-0. Their second and last game of 1892 they were defeated by Auburn 10-0 and that game began the souths oldest rivalry. In 1927 the bulldogs were voted national champions in 2 recognized polls. They were also defeated by their archrival Georgia Tech that same year. The 1942 team is considered by many to be the greatest roster in the teams first half century. The team was led that year by Heisman Trophy winner Sinkwich and all American end George Poschner. 1942 brought the Dawgs 11 wins and the national title with their rose bowl win agianst the University of California. The 1968 team also went to the sugar bowl but lost to Arkansas. In 1980 Georgia was undefeated and led by Hershel Walker. They beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl and won the National Championship. Coach Mark Richt was named head coach in 2000 and in 2002 the team won their first Sec Championship in 20 years.

2002 - Southeastern Conference Champions

On December 26,2000 Mark Richt was named head coach of the University of Georgia football team. Prior to that he served on the staff of Florida State for 15 years. He was the offensive coordinator his last seven years with the Seminols. Since coaching the Bulldogs they have won two SEC championships and three SEC Eastern Division titles. He was named SEC coach of the year in both 2002 and 2005. He has worked hard to make Georgia's football program one of the best in the nation. He is quoted to have said " I like to set our goals high, I never want to put a ceiling on what we can accomplish." The 2007 team finished 11-2 and defeated Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. They finished the season no.2 in the final Ap poll and no.3 in the coaches poll. The teams total record 2001-jan 2008 was 72 wins and 19 losses.
