Amazon has made it easy for eco- concious consumers to go green this fall. With the new Amazon Green store you can easily find all of the organic and sustainable products that Amazon carries. But that is not all.

There is also a green blog to help you keep up with the newest green gadgets and innovations. The posts are well written and interesting and don;t tend to be your run of the mill blah-blah-blog posts.

  • Get Your Home Ready For Winter (energy star)
  • Environmentally Sound Broadcasting
  • Carbon Auctions

You can find the top ten list of eco-friendly items, products that Amazon customers have voted on as well as categories on the side bar filled with green items that you may not be able to live with out.

The categories make it easy to find what you are looking for and include:

  • Green Media
  • Electronics
  • Home and Garden
  • Home Improvement
  • Grocery
  • Toys
  • Shoes
  • and more...

The front page also gives you a list of discussions that are going on about environmental issues, a green FAQs link, and the top eco-searches on Amazon. There are even tips and buying guides. Whether you are there to browse or to shop for something specific Amazon has really worked to make this site user friendly.

So...what are Amazon customer's top ten?

Number One:Reuseable Grocery Bag

Reusable grocery bags are probably one of the number one ways to make a difference on the planet.  This particular type comes in a pack of five.

  • They are large capacity for stuffing in all the extras that you swore you weren't going to buy (stick to the list!).
  • The company provides a plastic insert that you can put in the bottom of the bags to keep them stable.
  • They are the soft type, not the plastic type of bags.
  • They rate high with Amazon customers who have used them.
  • For all five the cost is less than ten dollars.
  • One customer stated that the bags were made in China so you may want to check into that.

Numbers Two & Three: CFLs

Have you noticed the cool spiral light bulbs in the stores? Well they are called compact fluorescent bulbs and their entire reason for existing is to light up your life cheaply. You can't beat that.

  • CFL's require 65% less energy to flood your room with light.
  • They last up to 10,000 hours (up to ten years)
  • Energy Star qualified
  • Come in several colors
  • Many cities require hazardous waste disposal for CFLs. Check with your city for details.

Number Four: Push Mower

Remember Mr. Cleaver mowing his yard witha  push mower in the old Leave It to Beaver shows?

Not only are push mowers great for the environment because they don't use gasoline, they are great for the person mowing!  If most of us did things the way they were done sixty years ago we would not need a $500.00 gym membership.

  • 20 inch reel mower
  • Radial tires
  • Nine grass heights
  • Five heat treated steel blades
  • Two year warranty
  • When is the last time you saw a mower for under $150.00?

How Easy is a Push Mower?

Number Five:Seventh Generation Bathroom TIssue

No lie, everyone needs it and yet it is one of those things that you really can' figure out how to recycle, right?

Seventh Generation is one of those companies that is upfront and honest. Rather than being green washed they are green all the way through. All of their products are quality and made ethically.

  • Two ply
  • Recycled paper (80 percent post consumer minimum)
  • No dyes, inks or fragrances

Here is the cool thing, though. You know that you are going to bneed toilet paper on a regular basis right? Youc an set it up with Amazon to have it delivered automatically and you will get 15 % off AND free shipping.

That is a deal.

Jeffrey Hollander of Seventh Generation

Number Six: Iron Horse Commuter Bike

O.k. If you commute 100 miles a day or live in a rainy climate this is probably not going to work for you but what a great way to make a difference in the environment! This commuter bike has:

  • A semi compact road frame
  • Flat alloy handlebars
  • Shimano five gear shifting for effortless shift
  • Vittoria Zafiro tires
  • lots more ...

If you regularly drive less than 10 miles or so to work you might consider this alternative. Imagine the savings in gasoline, not to mention the membership to the gym.

Number Seven: Spinning Composter

This is one of the fastest ways yet to turn kittchen waste into compost.

You know compost is what is going to produce those prize winning tomatoes, right? Well this composter makes  up to 85 pounds of compost in thirty days.  At that rate you can sell it to your neighbors and buy another one.

  • It is a compact size so you can even keep it on an apartment balcony.
  • Made of 50 percent post consumer recycled plastic
  • All ready assembled!

Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit
Price: $270.00
List Price: $599.99

Number Eight: Solar Charger Kit

60 watt solar charger kit is great for cabins, boats, and back up.  Depending on how much KwH you use per day this could at least keep the heater going.

In order to use solar power you will need to know how many kilowatts you use per day.  You will probably find that you use too many to make alternative energy a viable alternative unless you learn to cut back on your use.

Number Nine:Klean Kanteen Water Bottle

Do you need an indestructable water bottle that will not pick up odor and will leave your water tasting great all the time?

Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottles might be just what you are looking for.

  • Recyclable
  • Toxin free
  • Dishwasher friendly
  • Wide mouth to fit ice cubes

Everyone needs to drink more water.  Plastics start smelling bad after awhile and leach toxins and other icky stuff. (icky- technical term meaning very nasty).  These come in several sizes.

Number Ten: Kindle

Reading is not an ecologically sound hobby. Each book is created from hundreds of trees, and it can be said that prolific readers are the cause of major deforestation in the world today.

But, if you love to read all is not lost! Amazon has recently come out with the Kindle, an electronic reading device. Now you can download books on your kindle, and read them, and then download some more. And the trees can breathe a sigh of relief.

  • Simple to use. No need for a computer
  • Shop directly from the Kindle
  • More than 180,000 books available
  • Buy a book and have it downloaded in only a few seconds
  • Email word documents to Kindle to keep up with your correspondence and reports
  • Read the newpaper
  • Sunscroibe to your favorite magazine for only pennies a month

Kindle is pretty amazing. There are many more benefits to this device. Check it out.
