Yoplait's GoGurt has more sugar per ounce than Coca-Cola. With such ingredients, should parents think of this as a "healthy snack"?

Go-Gurt: A Healthy Treat?

I was at the grocery store recently, and I started looking at mother nature's perfect food "Go-Gurt". I'm assuming that the name means yogurt for people on the go. Yoplait makes it, and Go-Gurt primarily marketed to kids.

Clever or Deceptive?

First of all, in the ingredients list at the bottom, see how sugar isn't the first ingredient? Well, an unsuspecting parent may think of that as a good thing, but they cleverly used two different sweeteners. If they'd only used one sweetner though, sugar be the first ingredient. Clever huh.

More Sugar than Coca-Cola

With regards to sugars. Coca-Cola has 3.25 grams of sugars per ounce. Go-Gurt has 4.89 grams of sugars per ounce.

Go-Gurt Ingredients

I thought I'd post these because they seem hard to find on the internet. Yoplait didn't make them very easy to find on their site.

  • Cultured Pasteurized Grade A Milk
  • Sugar
  • Nonfat Milk
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Modified Corn Starch
  • Kosher Gelatin
  • Tricalcium Phosphate
  • Potassium Sorbate (preservative)
  • Carrageenan
  • Natural And Artificial Flavor
  • Carmine (a food additive for coloring, to make it you have to boil dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid)

Is a per ounce comparison on sugar relevant? How many times do you sit down and have a 2.25 ounce glass of Coca-Cola?

Yoplait ought to be ashamed of themselves... though most of the food manufacturers out there really should. My daughter may have ADHD and I've read that they need protein to help focus, I've been sending her to school w/ a go-gurt every day for snack time. Yes, I was fully aware that's probably not the best choice, prior to reading this site. It's so difficult for families with low-income to properly feed their children without getting a part-time job!!!
