...and how to effectively accomplish anything you want
Do any of these goal-setting and achievement problems sound familiar?
- Not accomplishing a goal you set for yourself
- Getting overworked and overcommitted trying to reach a goal (Confucious say "Man who choose overwork should be committed.")
- Getting so exhausted that you wish someone would just come rescue you ("HELzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzP!!!)
- Getting overwhelmed by the enormity of what it takes to reach your goal (Unless of course your goal is to be overwhelmed!)
- Getting distracted, side-tracked and slowed-down by diversions, doubt, schedule conflicts, etc. (I should probably get back to work...on those DONUTS!)
- Arriving at your goal, only to realize it's not what you really wanted after all (Wait...so I lost 8 toes to frostbite just so I could say "Great view from Mt. Everest!?")
If you said "yes" to any of the above, you'll want to pay close attention!

Top 10 List of Achievement Pitfalls To Avoid...and how to effectively accomplish anything you want
# 10 - Doing plan-and-control instead of flex-flow
Accomplishment is like riding a bike, you need to adjust your handlebars while you're peddling forward. If you set a plan of action and then try to rigidly adhere to it as you implement your plan, you'll often miss out on the opportunities and changes that could make your outcome far more satisfying, effortless, and rewarding. Instead of plan-and-control, learn what works and what doesn't, assimilate your discoveries, and adjust your plan as you go.
# 9 - Not noticing internal conflicts of interest
One side of you wants to lose weight, the other side of you wants to relish the joy of chocolate. If you don't resolve internal conflicts of interest, you'll forever be in a battle of one part of you over another. It's a losing game - no matter which side wins, part of you loses. Instead, ask A + B questions that integrate all sides of you, like, "How can I allow myself a bit of the joy of chocolate, while also honoring my intention to lose weight?" The answers you find when you integrate all sides of the problem will make reaching your goal inevitable.
# 8 - Forgetting to notice divine intervention, synchronicities and coincidences
When you set an intention and when your whole emotional field is aligned behind it, the universe aligns to meet you. Did you meet someone new in a coffee shop after deciding to hire a new personal assistant? Did you have an urge to take a different path to work? Pay attention to urges, intuitions, and unusual events that show up after you focus on your goal. The universe may be trying to deliver something that you asked for.
# 7 - Forcing instead of Doing
Now that you're trying to reach your goal, and you're clear about your action steps, do you feel like you're swimming upstream, with cement shoes on, while someone upriver is throwing logs into the water? If you do feel this way (even just a little bit), get out of pain's way. Instead, ask yourself, "how can I reach this goal with more ease and less effort?" Or ask yourself what items on your action plan you can delegate out to others. If those don't work, ask yourself if this particular step is absolutely, positively, vitally required, or if there's a path of less resistence to get you where you want to go. By choosing the minimum necessary ingredients that will produce your bottom line goal, you can radically decrease your effort-load.
# 6 - Making Goals around "have-to's" or "should-ing on yourself"
So you know what you "should" be doing but you're not doing it, and then all you feel is guilty and self-loathing because you're not doing what you should be doing. You see, no amount of "should" or "have to" or "must" works for reaching goals. Obligations, requirements, and guilt only lead to resentment, rebellion, and inner turmoil. To free yourself, rediscover the passion behind your goal. First, name the underlying value that you get, or that you're giving others, by reaching your goal. "I have to pay my bills," isn't motivating, but "I really want to take care of my family," or "I want some inner peace for a change," are underlying visions that motivate your unconscious mind. Second, create a detailed description of what it feels like and looks like when you REACH your goal. When you connect your goal to the emotion and core motivation behind it, you increase your likelihood of success.
# 5 - Expecting to do it by yourself
Consider the possibility that if you already had (inside and out) what you needed to get the job done, you'd already have it done. Ask yourself, "for this thing I"m not doing, what support could I ask for that would help me actually DO it?" No one is an island. When you're stuck or not taking action, try asking a friend for help. Three requests you ask of a friend include: "If you were in my shoes, what would you do?" (a strategy request) or, "I'd like you to do this with me so that I actually get it done," (request for help) or, "Would you be up for taking care of this for me?" (delegation request). When in doubt, use the power of 2 degrees of separation, "Who do you know who might be able to help me get this done?"
# 4 - Making dependency bottlenecks
Imagine you need bricks to build a skyscraper, and your brick supplier is sick. When we depend on one particular strategy to get the incredients for our bottom line, the risk of failure increases dramatically. To strengthen your progress toward your goal, make sure you line up at least 3 possible strategies for each ingredient that will result in your bottom line. For example, with 3 brick suppliers, if one is sick I simply go to another, no backlog, no bottleneck, no slow downs. What are the collective ingredients that make your bottom line inevitable, and what 3 strategies can you use to get each ingredient?
# 3 - Stuffing doubts instead of integrating them
Doubts are a signal of an underlying need that hasn't yet come conscious. If you hear yourself saying, "I don't have what it takes," don't believe the symptom, ask yourself, "What is this voice trying to tell me it needs?" Needs for support, confidence, trust, and hope often rise up in the dark forms of doubt, insecurity, procrastination, and hopelessness. Strengthen your progress by uncovering the root need behind the darkness, and making requests to help you meet those basic needs.
# 2 - Making unmeasurable goals / someday maybe
"Lose weight" or "Make more money" or "Be less miserable" may be goals you want to accomplish, but they're not specific enough to help you get there. How would you measure your goal? Quantify what you want into "how much" and "by when". Then cut yourself some slack for the learning curve involved in mastering your goal-setting upgrade. If you don't reach your intended goals, ask yourself when you WILL reach them, and celebrate the learning you got that got you this much closer. When your goals are tangible, measurable, and easily quantified, you can better learn what it'll take to get there.
And finally,
The # 1 Goal Setting Pitfall to Avoid - Getting dragged down or discouraged by failures, delays, and obstacles
Consider all failures, delays, and obstacles a sign to pay attention, and get curious about it. Ask 'how is this to my advantage' or ask 'in what way am i helping to create this, and what can i do differently to get a different result?'

Thanks, Gail,
I loved this list. I've been wondering if I've taken on a few too many projects and, as I looked at this list, it helped me realize what some of the problems are (Let's see, numbers 10, 9, 7, 6, 5...you hit them all).
By the way, I find that your #1 is one of the biggest issues that aspiring authors have. It generally takes a lot of "no's" before someone actually gets published. Those who succeed are those who look for the challenge in the "no" and ask, "What do I need to do next to turn a "no" into a "yes."
