Goal achievement - flexibility
57All the plans of mice and men
Yesterday I wrote a Hub on reusing content. I mentioned that today I would write a brand new article based on an idea I came up with last night and then reuse the content at least ten different days. That was the plan.
However, there were various minor emergencies which came up. Potentially I could still continue with the original plan but I had to think about the goal of writing 100 hubs in 30 days. To do that, I had planed to write an average five hubs a day for the first week.
So the minor goal of writing ten reused posts today and the more important challenge goal were in conflict.
Goal setting vs goal achieving
Everybody in self improvement field knows about and talks about goal setting. Goal setting may be great and fantastic but it's only the first step.
What really maters is goal achievement....
Flexibility in cybernetics
In cybernetics there is a law that (at least in NLP - neuro-linguistic programming) is called the law of requisite variety. It states:
- In any cybernetic control system the part with maximum flexibility will control the whole system.
Within NLP we give the example of a todler who manipulates her parents to buy her whatever she wants by changing behaviors every minute until she gets her way. One moment she pulls, smiles, cries, has a tantrum, is sweet....
Does whatever she needs to do to achieve her goal of getting her mother to buy that doll...

Change when needed
The way an aeroplane's autopilot works is to have a goal (say to go to San Fransisco). Every few seconds (minutes in the olden days when the pilot did the flying) the autopilot notices where the plane is and if it is still on course If on course - continue.
If not on course - take corrective action.
Actually the algorithm first asks, "Are we there yet?" If we are - then we're done. Victory.
Anyway, the best way to achieve your goals is to have sensory acuity (another NLP term) and notice if what we did or plan to do will keep us on track and then do it but if the situation has changed (like it did for me) take different actions.
So I'm delaying that micro-challenge of writing ten posts based on reuse of a single idea. For today I'll do my best to write five more Hubs.
