Brush Your Teeth
79I really need to go to the dentist again soon, but as a child I felt I had way too many dental appointments. When we first started seeing our dentist he was actually at all of the appointments, and these were needed because I had a few cavities I needed filling. However, after that for the next several years the dentist wanted me to come in every two months, and for my sisters to come in every four months. They told us yes six months is recommended for most people, but these more frequent check-ups were ideal for us. It still seemed odd we had to go so frequently, and after awhile we were only seeing the dental hygienist and did not even see the dentist at all.

I thought it was kind of odd that during most of my high school years I always was going to a dentist for a glorified "teeth cleaning". Some really good things came out of these appointments, such as becoming better at brushing my teeth, and the suggestion to get the Oral B electrical tooth brush. I swear by the Oral B electrical tooth brushes, and my last few hygienists have commented on how clean my teeth are, which I attribute to that device.
However, most of my memories of the dentist were of getting my teeth cleaned, and I went two years without actually seeing my dentist. During that entire time I did not have any x rays, and could only go off what the hygienist was telling me about the state of my teeth. The day I finally saw my dentist for the first time in two years he lectured me about needing a new filling, and how I should have "known" better. However, with my aggressive teeth hygiene regimen I had done all I could on my part, but what about his two year lapse in actually looking in my mouth? Every other dentist I have been too, and that my niece and nephew has been to has actually seen us, and did not relegate us to the hygienist for most of the visits.
I really enjoy going to the dentist, but as a teen I felt so scolded by this dentist over having one cavity. Later on I would learn that my teeth are really impacted, so it would be a little impossible for me to avoid all cavities. Actually as an adult I have had to have many of my fillings from when I was a teen refilled, and I am not thrilled about that at all.
The day I went to have my teeth filled as a teen the dentist got frustrated with me because I was not opening my mouth wide enough. I was trying my best, but in a huff he stalked out of the room for ten minutes. The hygienist put a wedge on my mouth to keep it open, but at the time I did not realize how much it was cutting into the side of my mouth.
After leaving the dentist I was in severe pain and realized the side of my mouth was cut. My sister and I talked about how weird it was the hygienists would lecture us. One hygienist told us we were lucky to get so much attention to our teeth because most of the kids that come in cannot afford it. Why would they tell us this? I guess they wanted us to appreciate the care we were receiving or something. However this appointment would be my last once I discovered I had a deep cut in the corner of my mouth.
The large cut on my mouth due to the wedge being clamped on left a horrible scab. I was supposed to have my senior pictures taken that week, but I actually had to wait two weeks for the scrape to heal. Even after it healed I put some makeup on it because I would have a prominent scar on the side of my mouth for the next couple of years, and I certainly did not want that showing up in my picture. Even today when I lightly brush the corner of my mouth I can still feel the bump from where the wedge was stuck on way too tight.
After that day we never went back to that dentist. I am appreciative that I was able to go to the dentist, but towards the end it just got too weird for me. I have no ill feelings or anything, but those hygienist and that dentist were way too harsh on us verbally. Later on I learned from dentists I had as an adult that my teeth are highly impacted, and it would have been impossible to avoid some of the cavities I have. As an adult I never felt lectured to or talked down to by my dentist or hygienist, and I think children should be accorded the same respect. These are just a few thoughts about dentistry and my childhood.

I to dread going to the dentist in fact, like you, I went every six months but have cut way down…Why, because of too many x- rays.’ Seems every time you go in, they need to check that last filling, etc... Coming from a family of doctors and nurses, I have always been told that x-rays, should only be done when an area of concern presents its self…end of story!
Hi Pete,
I was going every six months when I had dental insurance, but I must admit that I have not been in two years. I should go again soon!
Nancy,
So too many x rays are not good? Thanks for sharing that because I had heard mixed things about that. Personally with my electrical tooth brush I feel I can go some very long stretches without seeing the dentist.
Nice Hub !
Glad you enjoyed it Heysmarty
Thanks SweetiePie, the topics of your hubs are really nice. :)
I will check out your hubs as well heysmarty :).
It makes me sad that you had such a horrible time at the dentist growing up! Those people sound wretched. I've been going to the same dentist my entire life, and I love it. Every visit is like catching up with old friends. Your old dentist/hygienists deserve a swift kick in the pants :0)
Sorry about your bad experiences. It really helps to find a dentist you like. I was lucky in that when I was little my uncle was a dentist. He did our whole families teeth. Unfortunately I had terrible baby teeth. I had to go to a specialist often for crowns and fillings. The specialist had a horrible Russian Accent. I never ate more candy than any other kid and my aunt and uncle made sure I did a good job brushing. I simply had poor teeth. Man that Russian dentist caused so much pain. It hurt like hell. My aunt felt so bad dragging me there. Luckily ever since my adult teeth came in they have been perfect. No fillings or braces or anything. All my dentists can't believe how good they are and seem shocked when I tell them how bad my baby teeth were. I still eat the same and brush the same with a regular old tooth brush. Good luck at the dentist.
Oh the dentist stories we could all share! Sounds like you were talking about my hygenist, always talking down and thought she was doing me a favor. I had enough and found myself a new dentist. I have had no problems over the past 2 years until my hygenist left and 6 weeks ago a new hygenist cleaned my teeth, cleaning away all the enamel on my chewing teeth. Because she also checked the depth of my gum pockets which can be a bit sore after, I just kept thinking it would get better. Well yesterday I went back to see what was wrong and thats when the dentist told me about the enamel was cleaned away and my roots were exposed. No wonder I haven't been able to eat. Good way to lose weight, that's the positive side, I guess, lol. I was given a prescription gel toothpaste to apply to my teeth every night but the pharmacy didn't have it in stock.. I'm still w a i t i n g..... Thanks for allowing me to get this off my chest, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. BTW, they also want to see me every 4 months, after this visit, yeah right!!!!
Megavitamin,
I had a dentist I loved two years ago, but then I moved and have not been since. I plan to go to the dentist again soon.
Jim,
I agree with you about finding a dentist I like. Now that I am an adult I would not go to a dentist or hygienist that made me feel uncomfortable.
Dottie,
I had several hygienists in high school, and they were all like that. One time she took a scrapping tool and scraped my teeth so hard that it made my gums bleed. Well anyone's gums would bleed if that happened. I even know a few people that buy high tech cleaning sets and just clean their own teeth. I went to the hygienist two years ago and she was okay, but I think next time around I will just see the dentist.
I dread going to the dentist, myself. I put it off dreadfully, but it has to be done sooner or later. I'm lucky to have hard teeth and few fillings.
Most adults treat children with almost a marked lack of personal respect. I think it's just a person doesn't really earn their stripes until they have grown up and dealt with a few things. Still, it seems like your dentist and hygenist went a bit over the top, there.
Paradise,
I try to talk to kids like adults because I find they respect me more for it. I do not think they are capable of all adults can do, but I have found it is much easier to deal with kids if you treat them as if they are on an adult level. This is especially important with kids who mature more quickly such as I did. By the age of twelve I was more interested in following the news on CNN than watching cartoons, so it was frustrating to have adults treat me like I was three or so. I just so believe in according everyone personal respect, but I am over the top in that way. It is an introverted thing I believe as I treat people as individuals, and I have learned many young people are just so much more capable than even their parents. However, I do get what you are saying, and everyone has a vastly different take on this issue. I will argue to adults out there that treating young people with respect will earn their respect in return.
I have found the quality of dentistry to be quite variable in my lifetime. I'm very happy to have found someone who is really good. Thanks, Sweetiepie!
Very good points Jess!
Great hub SP. You just reminded me to go to a dentist for my cleaning. =) I haven't been to one for two years now. Yikes!
emievil,
You know I have not either, but there are certain brushes you can buy that do the same thing really. I think there is one particular brush just like the hygienists use, and I would probably not purchase that one, but a regular electrical tooth brush works well too!

The dentist office is not my favorite place either. I go every six months so far so good.
